LAKELAND, Fla. - The Florida Southern College men's soccer team hosted Palm Beach Atlantic University in a Sunshine State Conference match on Saturday night. The Sailfish (3-1-2, 2-0-1 SSC) went down two men in the match due to red cards but found a way late to come away with a 1-0 win over the Moccasins (2-3-2, 0-3-0 SSC).
Â
It was PBA that controlled the first 30 minutes of action until a yellow card gave FSC the momentum.
Felix Tonne took advantage of the Sailfish's card just missing back-to-back shots going over the top of the net. In the 38th minute,
Darcy Moffat put the first shot on goal for the Mocs finding the hands of the Sailfish's keeper, Omar Einarsson.Â
Â
Florida Southern finally found their momentum from another PBA card as
Jay Skelcher-Maxwell had a shot on goal that was saved and
Ruben Linden capitalized on a second yellow card that turned into a red for PBA's Narcis Bou Dalmau. FSC closed out the first half with a man-up advantage to start the second half.Â
Â
The Mocs controlled the entire second half from the jump having 19 shots as the first shot came in the 49th minute from
Dylan Lowther sliding right into the PBA keeper's hands for a save. Florida Southern never let up, even battling to force another red card on the Sailfish. PBA defenders and keeper were kept on their toes with nine shots, five being on goal with a two-man down formation.Â
Â
It was on back-to-back shots from
Sander Trevor that the Sailfish keeper dove to the bottom left for the save and allowed Agustin Iusem to sub into the game finding the back of the far-left net to score the lone goal for PBA.
Â
Feeling the pressure of an 81
st-minute goal, Florida Southern's offense started to press as five different Mocs tried to tie the game in the final minutes of action.
George Spencer,
Sonny Albert, and Moffat all missed off the top as
Eric Damore's two shots were saved by Omar who battled in between the posts for a clean sheet. The final shot was from
Paul Hansen who saw his first minutes as a Moc tonight but it was just not enough as the game went in favor of the Sailfish.Â
Â
The Moccasins outshot the Sailfish 24-to-8 on the year while PBA's keeper at 10 saves and FSC's finished with three.Â
Â
Florida Southern is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 9 as they travel down I4 to Winter Park where they will face Rollins College in a rematch from last year's quarterfinal game. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Cahall-Sandspur Field.Â
