LAKELAND, Fla. - The Florida Southern College women's basketball team returned to action after a 13-day hiatus making up for lost time as they defeated Trinity College 109-29 in game one in the annual Mocs Christmas Classic.
Every single Moccasin (6-4, 2-2 SSC) put up numbers in the win as
Sydney Gomes led the way with 17 points, followed by
Bre'Asia Washington and
Gianna Vos with 13 off the bench and
Lily Randgaard and
Lily Pereira both contributing 12 in the win and close out the double-figure scoring.
It was a big day for FSC as five had career-highs as sophomores Pereira, Vos, and Washington all earned career-highs in points, while freshmen
Nia Blocton and
Ella Kletti established career-highs of six points for Blocton and five points for Kletti.
Anna Denes got the game started with a layup in the opening minutes. Gomes and Desiree Green exchanged 3-pointers for their respective teams until Gomes hit her second shot beyond the arc, going 2-2 from the three.
Catalina Ion and Gomes went on a 7-0 run, giving FSC a nine-point advantage with five minutes left in the first quarter.
The Tigers cut the Mocs lead down to 15-8, but a 22-2 run in favor of Florida Southern gave FSC a 27-point advantage heading into the second quarter. The run continued for the Mocs as
Sarah Lange, Washington, Vos, and Blocton went 8-0 in the first four minutes of the quarter.
Florida Southern kept the momentum, only allowing Trinity to score four points in the entire second quarter. Kletti earned her first collegiate points in the quarter, scoring from a fast-break layup and a 3-pointer, helping lead the Mocs to the locker room for halftime without scoring the Tigers 21-4.
With a 58-15-point lead heading into the third quarter, FSC never let up. The 3-pointers flew as Randgaard, Ion, Gomes, Pereira, Vos, and Washington all sank shots beyond the arc to contribute to the 66-point lead that closed out the quarter.
The Mocs continued to lead heading into the final quarter as Blocton gave FSC the biggest lead of the game to finish with an 80-point lead.
Florida Southern continues action in the Mocs Christmas Classic as they face Maryville tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 21 in the final game. The tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
