LAKELAND, Fla. - The Florida Southern College women's basketball team concluded regular-season action tonight with a dominating 77-59 win against Rollins College in Sunshine State Conference action.
Before tonight's game, FSC honored the members of the Tars (12-13, 9-10 SSC) senior class before honoring the Moccasins (15-12, 8-12 SSC) graduate student
Domenica Zamora.
Zamora is a three-year member of the women's basketball team. The point guard hails from Quayaquil, Ecuador, and has played a vital role in the Mocs success. Zamora earned her 1,000 career points earlier this year against Palm Beach Atlantic and after today's game, she is tallying 1,077 points in her career. She is leading the FSC from the 3-point arc shooting a .392%, while averaging 28.2 minutes per game with 8.2 points per game and 4.1 boards per game. Zamora will be earning a degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and will be attending NSU KPCOM medical school after graduation in May.
Against the Tars,
Marissa Jenike led the way with 21 points going 7-for-10 from beyond the arc.
Arriyana Bracero followed with 15 points from the bench along with
Arielle Dabu dishing out 12 points of her own. Rollins had two finish in double digits as Claire Erickson totaled 14 points and Maddie Dillinger put out 10 points.
Florida Southern and Rollins opened the first quarter going back-and-forth with nine lead changes and three ties ending with Mocs down by three, 18-15.
Bracero opened up the second quarter sinking a 3-pointer as
Sydney Gomes, and Jenike followed suit with all three hitting shots beyond the arc to take a six-point lead after just a minute and half of action. The Tars closed in making it 24-20, but another Jenike 3-pointer kept the Mocs on top 27-20. Rollins was able to close into a five-point deficit, but a Bracero jumper and back-to-back 3-pointers from Jenike and a Dabu gave FSC a 16-point lead with three minutes remaining in the second quarter.
Jenike concluded her run sinking her fifth 3-pointer of the quarter giving the Mocs the largest lead of the quarter, 38-24. The Tars scored on a layup and hit the and-one, ending the quarter and heading into the halftime break with FSC up 41-27, outscoring Rollins 26-9.
FSC continued to outscore Rollins in each of the remaining quarters as the Mocs never let up on a double-figure lead. Erickson was able to get within 12 points, but a foul sent Dabu to the charity line taking the Mocs lead back up to a 14-point lead. Both teams went back and forth, scoring as Jenike, Zamora, and Bracero all hit threes with just under five minutes remaining, 52-34. Dabu pushed the Mocs to a 20-point lead on a fastbreak layup, but the Tars tried to catch up to FSCs lead, but FSC finished the third with a 56-41 lead.
The Moccasins never let up pushing the limits earning the largest lead of 22 points after Gomes and one, and Zamora and one. The Tars continued to pressure the Mocs defense closing the gap, 76-59, but the game belonged to FSC closing out the regular-season in Jenkins Field House with a 77-59 win.
With the win, Florida Southern solidified their spot in eighth place in the SSC tournament. They will now await the conclusion of the conference regular season on Saturday to see who they will play in the quarterfinal of the tournament.
