LAKELAND, Fla. - The Florida Southern College softball team earned its first sweep of the season with a 3-1 win in game one, and followed with a 5-0 shutout in game two against visiting Carson-Newman University.
The Moccasins (3-1) were led by
Destiny Colgate in game one, as the fifth year went 1-for-2 with 2 RBIs, a triple, and a run scored. In game two, Colgate went 3-for-4, with a double, scored a run, and one runner batted in. Third baseman
Kelly Keating had a perfect day from the plate, going an impressive 3-for-3 from the plate with a double, and an RBI.
For the Eagles (1-3), Macey Hughes went 2-for-3 in game one while Trinity Brooks and Hayden Dye both went 2-for-3 from the plate in game two.

The success from last night's game continued as leadoff
Kiki Morris opened up with a double down the left field line in the bottom of the first.
Kenleigh Smith singled to short and advanced on a sac bunt in Mocs next at-bat, putting both Morris and Smith in scoring positions. Colgate put FSC on the board first, with an RBI sac fly scoring Morris for a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, Colgate connected with the ball for an RBI triple scoring
Kate Mikle who singled to lead off the inning. Colgate later scored on the next at-bat to give FSC a 3-0 advantage over Carson-Newman.
The Eagles continued to battle but no runners came across until the top of the seventh. In the final inning, Carson-Newman opened up with back-to-back singles with no outs to put pressure on the Mocs defense. Right-handed pitcher
Ella Torres and the Mocs infield shut down the Eagles offense on a fielder's choice and a strikeout looking to make it two outs. With just one more out to conclude game one, the Eagles hit an RBI single, making the shutout out of reach. A flyout quickly ended the game in the next at-bat and Mocs would take game one 3-1.
Torres collected her first collegiate win, pitching a complete game allowing just one run on six hits while striking out two. The Mocs outhit the Eagles 11-to-6, as Morris and Smith both went 2-for-4 followed by
Kelsey Kadlub and
Jadyn Bushnell going 2-for-3.
FLORIDA SOUTHERN 5, CARSON-NEWMAN 0
The Eagles attacked first, getting into scoring position with singles. With one out and runners on second the third, Carson-Newman's Brooke Matyasovs hit a fly ball to
Skyler Ralstin for out two, as Ralstin turned the double play getting the runner coming into home to keep the game scoreless.
In the bottom of the third FSC added runs on the board as Mikle continued her hot bat with a double to right center field. Colgate switched places with Mikle in the next at-bat hitting an RBI double down the left field line. The Mocs were up 1-0 with one out, but back-to-back RBI singles from Keating and Bushnell pushed FSC to a 3-0 lead after three innings of play.
In the final inning, Ralstin hit an RBI single to right field, scoring Smith to make it 4-0. The Mocs scored another insurance run on a sac fly to conclude game two in shutout fashion, 5-0.
In the circle,
Mel Rogers pitched a complete game to earn the shutout with nine hits in seven innings and striking out two batters.
Due to the weather, the Mocs have canceled the game originally scheduled for tomorrow against Montevallo. FSC will hit the road for the first time this season as the head to take on West Florida on Saturday, Feb. 10. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
