LAKELAND, Fla. – A perfect home opener for the Florida Southern College women's soccer team with a 3-0 win against Bentley University Falcons on Friday night at Berend Field.

The Mocs (2-1-0) dominated the first half with two goals and added a third in the second half as
Ashley Shimberg led the team with two goals. The Falcons (2-1-0) were shut out in the first half with no shots taken and held scoreless behind the second clean sheet this season for Moccasin keeper
Carly Brodsky.

Florida Southern had a hot start in front of its home crowd with eight shots in the first 15 minutes of the game, leading to the first goal of the game by Shimberg in the 19
th minute.
Alison Jenkins had a great leading pass for Shimberg that only needed one touch before a laser from the lefty into the back of the net.

With all of the momentum on the FSC front attack, Bentley could not stop the shots being taken with several on goal from a host of Moccasins. In the 38
th minute,
Jasmin Adames had a deep shot that the Bentley keeper had to punch out, but right to the foot of
Sierra Spirk, who handled the ball and struck the second goal of the game for FSC. The Mocs entered halftime with a 2-0 lead after 13 shots, compared to zero for the Falcons.

As FSC continued to take shots in the second half, the first shot for the Falcons was in the 64
th minute with a great save by Brodsky to keep the Mocs up by two. Both teams traded shots, over the next 10 minutes before a hard tackle in the 78
th minute gave FSC a penalty kick opportunity. Shimberg took the honors after drawing the foul and hit the bottom right of the net for a 3-0 Moccasin lead and her second goal of the game. A solo shot by Bentley in the final 10 minutes was not successful as FSC won 3-0 after 90 minutes.

As a team, Florida Southern had 18 shots, eight on goal, compared to just four total shots (all in the second half) by Bentley. Shimberg led the team with seven shots and two goals as
Rilee Hasegawa, Jenkins, and Spirk each had three shots. Brodsky earned her second win of the season and her second shutout after two saves and facing four shots. Claire Ewen had the loss for the Falcons and finished with five saves.

The Mocs wrap up their home-opening weekend by hosting Assumption University on Sunday, Sept. 15 with an 11 a.m. start at Berend Field.
