LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Southern College women's soccer team recorded its first tie of the 2024 season with a 1-1 draw against Assumption University Sunday afternoon at Berend Field.
Â
The Mocs (2-1-1) had another goal by Friday night's star
Ashley Shimberg but could not get any other of their 27 shots in the net. The Greyhounds (4-0-1) survived the Moccasin attack behind 11 saves by their keeper, while adding a single goal to walk away with a 1-1 draw in Lakeland.
Â
Florida Southern had an explosive start to the half with its first shot of the game by
Alison Jenkins in the first 15 seconds of the match. FSC continued its offensive attack for the entire first half with 13 shots taken compared to just one by Assumption. The Mocs had several shots on goal by a host of players, including
Ally Prentice, Madison Male, and
Ashley Shimberg.
Â
With another start in goal,
Carly Brodsky saw an early shot on goal in the opening 15 minutes, though it was saved to keep a 0-0 tie. A deep goal kick by Brodsky in the 22
nd minute kept FSC on the attack front as
Sierra Spirk had a great leading pass to Shimberg to score her third goal of the weekend and a 1-0 lead for the Mocs.
Â
Shimberg nearly added another goal two minutes later, but the shot was saved by AU's goalie Frida Larrson in one of her 11 saves for the game. Back-to-back shots on goal by Jenkins did not find the net to send a one-goal lead for Florida Southern into halftime.
Â
Florida Southern continued with the shots in the opening minutes of the second half before a goal kick by AU set up an opportunity for the Greyhounds in a similar fashion to the Moccasin goal in the first half. Delaney Farinha had the shot on goal for AU to tie the game just outside the reach of Brodsky on the left side of the goal.
Â
The pressure was elevated for both teams with a far more aggressive attack traded by Assumption and Florida Southern for the remainder of the game. The Mocs had great shots on goal while blocking shots on the other side of the field to keep a tie game. A late shot on goal by Shimberg in the final minutes was the last chance for either team in what ended as a 1-1 tie, the first tie for both teams in the 2024 season.
Â
Another dominating game for shots by FSC with 27-to-7 against AU. Larrson, the Greyhounds' keeper, stole the show with 11 saves, many that displayed the diving reach of Larrson. Shimberg led the team with eight shots as the only goal scorer for FSC. Jenkins was not far behind with five shots, and two on goal as a leader for the Moccasins. The two shots on goal for Assumption and seven shots proved enough to match Florida Southern 1-1 and return to Massachusetts with a tie.
Â
The Mocs will hit the road for a midweek game against Georgia College and State University on Wednesday, Sept. 18 for a 4 p.m. start in Milledgeville, Ga.
