MILLEDGEVILLE, Fla. – A late goal by
Brinley Beorlegui lifted the Florida Southern College women's soccer to a 1-0 win against Georgia College and State University on Wednesday afternoon at the Bobcat Soccer Field.
Â
The Mocs (3-1-1) dominated the first half with shots on goal and capitalized on opportunities late to snag the first road win of the season. The Bobcats (3-2-0) had a powerful swing of momentum in the second half but were held scoreless in another shutout for
Carly Brodsky.
Â
Another controlling first half for the Moccasins with nine sots to the Bobcats' one in the first 45 minutes. The first great chance for the Mocs came in the 13
th minute as reigning SSC Offensive Player of the Week,
Ashley Shimberg, had a shot on goal that GCSU's keeper had a diving save to keep the game scoreless. Shimberg added another shot on goal shortly after, one of four saves for the Bobcats in the first half.
Â
Most of the possession remained with the Mocs in the first half with late shots by
Ori Gotauco and
Anita Vera that nearly made the net. The sole shot by GCSU came on a free kick outside the box from a Moccasin yellow card, but Brodsky was there for the low driving shot. Despite the offensive dominance by FSC, both teams were scoreless into halftime.
Â
GCSU opened the second half with a change in momentum to fire off 11 shots in the final 45 minutes, including five shots on goal. Brodsky was tested in the opening 10 minutes with four saves without a single shot taken by the Mocs in the same span.
Â
Florida Southern struggled to get the ball outside the GCSU attacking third for most of the game, until a great opportunity in the 78
th minute. A fantastic display of passing led to a header toward the box and a Moccasin kick for the goal but was waved off with an offsides after a lengthy discussion among officials.
Â
Undeterred, the Moccasins had another great save by Brodsky at one end and a surge by
Alison Jenkins on the right side for a short cross to Beorlegui to net what would be the game winner in the final 10 minutes. The FSC defense held off any other attack by the Bobcats and even added a shot on goal by
Kennedy Johnsen as the Beorlegui goal in the 83
rd minute, the first of her collegiate career, was good for a 1-0 final in Milledgeville.
Â
Both teams were even at 12 shots and six on goal for the match, each taking a half to secure a majority of their shots. Brodsky ended with six saves, a new career high, to snag her third shutout of the season. Shimberg again led the team in shots with three and
Rilee Hasegawa was second with two shots as a substitution. Emily Agi led the Bobcats with three shots, two on goal as GCSU keeper Ella Hayes finished with five saves in the loss. Â
Â
The Mocs will play their first conference matchup of the season on the road against Lynn University on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 6 p.m. in Boca Raton.
