LAKELAND, Fla. — The Florida Southern College women's soccer team (7-1-2) shut out Edward Waters University (2-6-1) with a commanding 3-0 victory at Berend Field on Sunday night.
The Moccasins' defense held the Tigers to zero shots on goal, while they tallied 13 shots on target.
Carly Brodsky secured a shutout in goal, her eighth shutout of the season, tying a program record of shutouts in a single season (most recently by Jenny Staten in 2023).
The first half began with Florida Southern taking an early lead, as
Bria Weldon scored in the 2nd minute with an assist from
Breena Harrigan. Florida Southern maintained offensive pressure, with several attempts on goal, including a shot from
Isabella Payne that was initially saved but later converted into a goal in the 17th minute, extending the lead to 2-0.
Florida Southern continued to dominate possession, capitalizing with a third goal by
Sierra Spirk in the 41st minute. The half concluded with Florida Southern leading 3-0, demonstrating effective control and execution on their home field.
Florida Southern began the second half with a strong offensive drive, highlighted by
Ally Prentice hitting the top woodwork at 53:03. The Moccasins maintained pressure with shots from
Ava Hackworth and
Ellie Dossantos, though both attempts were defended by the Tigers' goalkeeper, Solange Brown.
Throughout the half, Florida Southern continued to test the visitors' defense with multiple shots from
Jamie Klein and
Megan Rhonemus. Despite several attempts, including shots on target saved by goalkeeper Olivia Galloway, Florida Southern was unable to extend their lead.
The half concluded with Florida Southern holding a 3-0 lead, maintaining their advantage from the first half and preventing the Tigers from closing the gap.
Payne scored one goal and finished with two shots on goal for FSC. Weldon added a goal, which was also the game-winner, and was perfect with two shots on goal. Dossantos led the team in shots with five, two of which were on target. Brodsky faced five shots with none on goal for the shutout.
Brown was in goal for Edward Waters with seven saves, facing 24 shots and conceding three goals over 77:34 minutes. Her performance included six saves in the first half. Galloway also contributed in goal with three saves during her 12:26 minutes, successfully keeping a clean sheet. On the offensive side, Dadie Cherenfant led the team in attempts with three shots, though none were on target.
The next challenge for Florida Southern takes place on October 15 as they host the University of Tampa. The match will kick off at 7 p.m. at Berend Field in Lakeland, Florida.
