ORLANDO, Fla. - Kevin Capers was named the Sunshine State Conference's Top Player of the last 25 years, while three other Moccasins were honored as members of the SSC Golden Anniversary Men's Basketball Team.
The Sunshine State Conference celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2025, marking the golden anniversary of the conference.
Kevin Capers stands as one of the most iconic players in Florida Southern and Sunshine State Conference history, earning recognition as the SSC Player of the Last 25 Years. A dynamic scorer and fierce competitor, he built a legacy of postseason heroics, elite production, and one of the most decorated résumés the league has ever seen—collecting All-America honors, South Region Player of the Year, SSC Player of the Year, SSC Tournament MVP, Freshman of the Year, and numerous weekly and all-region accolades.
From the moment he arrived on campus, Capers made an immediate impact, becoming the first freshman in program history to record over 400 points and 100 assists. His scoring took off from there, highlighted by a breakout sophomore postseason, a junior season leading the SSC at 21.5 points per game, and a legendary 46-point performance in the NCAA South Regional—the second-highest scoring game in school history. Capers powered Florida Southern to the 2015 Division II National Championship, earned multiple All-America awards, and currently ranks third all-time in SSC scoring.
Jadin Booth (2021-25), Brett Hanson (2016-20), and Jonathan Lawton (2017-19) were also honored as members of the 13-player squad.
Booth delivered one of the most accomplished careers in Florida Southern history, earning NABC All-America honors, multiple All-South Region and All-SSC selections, the Ryan Turell Character & Inspiration Award, and two SCB Hall of Fame Classic MVP titles. A finalist at every stage of the Bevo Francis Award Watch List and a six-time SSC Player of the Week, he finished as the program's 47th 1,000-point scorer and ended his career ranked top-10 all-time in points, three-point percentage, and first in free throw percentage.
Hanson authored one of the most prolific careers in Florida Southern history, culminating as the 2020 NABC National Player of the Year, SSC Player of the Year, D2CCA Player of the Year, and a Bevo Francis Award finalist. A four-year standout who earned multiple All-America, All-Region, and All-SSC honors, Hanson consistently dominated on both ends of the floor, collecting numerous SSC Player of the Week awards and two SSC Tournament MVP titles. He became just the third Moccasin ever to surpass 2,000 career points, finishing top-six all-time in scoring, rebounds, assists, and steals.
Lawton delivered a dominant two-year run at Florida Southern, emerging as one of the nation's elite scorers and one of the most decorated players in program history. A 2019 NABC First Team All-American, SSC Player of the Year, and South Region Player of the Year, he earned multiple All-America honors and was a Top-25 finalist for the Bevo Francis Award. Lawton averaged more than 22 points per game in both seasons, finishing with two of the top single-season scoring totals in school history and earning back-to-back Team MVP honors. Lawton eclipsed 90% from the free-throw line and over 41% from three, while posting numerous 20+ point games.
The Golden Anniversary honorees embody the modern era of SSC basketball, a time defined by national championships, record-breaking achievements, and increased national prominence. These 14 standouts feature National Players of the Year, All-Americans, 2,000-point scorers, and NCAA Division II champions. To be considered for the Golden Anniversary 2000-25 squad, student-athletes had to meet one of several criteria. They must have been named SSC Player of the Year, selected to the SSC Hall of Fame, or received at least an Honorable Mention All-America distinction between the 2000-01 and 2024-25 seasons. The top players from the past 25 years were selected by the head athletic communication directors from the 11 SSC member institutions. They join 14 legends from the league's Silver Anniversary Team (1975-1999) to create a 28-member historic roster, celebrating the conference's most outstanding talent.
