DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Florida Southern College women's basketball team traveled to Daytona Beach to take on #11/7 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Sunshine State Conference action. The Moccasins (10-12, 5-10 SSC) outscored the Eagles (20-2, 14-1) in the first half 47-38 leading by as much as 19 points, but a strong second half gave the ranked ERAU team an 81-73 win on Wednesday afternoon at the ICI Center.
Florida Southern was led by
Lily Randgaard putting up 19 points, followed by
Arriyana Bracero with 16 and
Sydney Gomes with 13 to close out the double-digits. For Embry-Riddle, they had four in double figures led by Madyson Jean-Louis with 22 points, Jenna Tereycz with 18, Mary Lengemann finishing with 12, and Kailey Turpening with 10.
Lily Pereira got the scoring starting early for the Mocs, putting the first points on the board with a layup for a 2-0 lead with 9:47 on the clock.
Catalina Ion followed with a shot beyond the arc to make it a 5-0 lead before the Eagles put numbers of its own on the board.
The first quarter Florida Southern dominated the court, scoring 35 points going on a 12-2 run with 3-pointers from Pereira and Bracero, and layups from
Anna Denes and two from Bracero in the first four minutes of action.
With a 13-point lead, Embry-Riddle cut the scoring gap down to single digits with back-to-back shots from Jean-Louis to make it 17-8. Denes answered with a three, giving FSC back to double-figure lead. The Mocs continued to push its lead, giving as much as a 15-point lead, with Randgaard closing out the first quarter with a 3-pointer layup where she was fouled, making the free throw for a 35-19 lead.
Embry-Riddle started to come back in the second quarter, but not before Florida Southern got out to a 19-point lead after a jumper from
Gianna Vos. After the jumper, the Eagles went on a 13-0 run to end the quarter, finishing with a Randgaard 3-pointer to make it still a 9-point game heading into the locker room 47-38 at the half.
Out of halftime, Gomes scored on a fast break to give the Mocs back a double-digit lead, but ERAU forced the pressure, tying the game with a jumper 53-52 with under four in the third quarter. Denes made layup put the Mocs back up by two, but a 3-pointer from Teterycz gave Embry-Riddle the first lead of the game, 56-55. The Mocs and Eagles exchanged leads one last time before ERAU ended the quarter with a 62-57 lead.
The Eagles kept the lead the majority of the fourth, only tying the game after Gomes scored on a fast break layup where she was fouled and sent to the line for the and-one, making it to tie the game 69-69 with 3:16 remaining in regulation.
Embry-Riddle broke the tie sinking 3-pointer and continued to add to the Eagles lead, never letting up finishing with an 81-73 win.
Florida Southern continues action on the road Saturday as they head down Miami Shores to take on Barry University in another SSC matchup. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
