Florida Southern Mourns the Loss of Hall of Famer Hal Wissel

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Southern College Department of Athletics mourns the loss of FSC and Sunshine State Conference Hall of Famer Hal Wissel who passed away on Monday, Feb. 10.
 
Wissel spent five seasons as Florida Southern's men's basketball head coach leading the Moccasins to four NCAA Tournament appearances including capturing the 1981 National Championship. Over his final three seasons as head coach, the Mocs finished third in the National Championship in 1980, won the title in 1981 and fell in the title game in 1982. He guided the Mocs to a 97-49 overall record and was named the SSC Coach of the Year three times and the NABC NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year in 1980.
 
In addition to his time at Florida Southern, Wissel also served as the head coach at Trenton State (1964-67), Lafayette (1967-71), Fordham (1971-76), Charlotte (1982-85) and Springfield (1986-90). He also spent one season as an assistant coach with the Atlanta Hawks midway through his college coaching journey from 1976-77. While at Fordham, he led the NCAA Division I Rams to the NIT in 1972.
 
Following his time at Springfield, Wissell spent 14 of the next 17 years coaching as an assistant in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He served on the coaching staff of the Milwaukee Bucks (1990-95), New Jersey Nets (1996-99), Memphis Grizzlies (2002-05) and Golden State Warriors (2006-07). From 2001-02, he served as an advance scout in the Dallas Mavericks organization.
