Mocs Fall to Buccaneers on the Road

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - The Florida Southern College softball team traveled down to Barry University to open the Sunshine State Conference series falling in the opener 10-2 in five innings of play at Buccaneer Field.

The Moccasins (3-14, 1-6) were led by Morgan Roden going 2-for-2 while Alissa Kessler went 1-for-3 with two runners batted in. The Buccaneers (14-5, 6-1 SSC) were led by Becka Mellor going 2-for-2 with three batters bringing in two runners apiece.

Barry started the game hot, scoring two in the bottom of the first after getting runners on and in scoring position from back-to-back walks. One of the runs scored from an RBI double down the left field line and then a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 after one inning of action.

Shelby Savitt led off with the first hit for the Mocs in the top of the second with a single to center field. Roden also singled through the right side to put two hits on the board for the Mocs but a runner never crossed home plate.

In the bottom of the third, Florida Southern was able to get two runners out early as they looked for the third but Mocs errors allowed two runners to score as Barry increased the lead to 4-0. In the top of the fourth, Jadyn Bushnell hit a two out single as Roden moved Bushnell 90 feet from home with a single down the right field line but Mocs would leave runners stranded at the corners.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Bucs doubled their lead scoring on a 2 RBI double and back-to-back fielder's choices to go up 8-0. In the top of the fifth Mocs put two runners on the board to cut the Bucs lead with a 2-run single from Kessler.

In the bottom of the fifth, Barry finished out game one ending the game with a 2-run homer to end the game in a 10-2 run rule over the Mocs.

Florida Southern returns to action tomorrow with a doubleheader against Barry. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on Buccaneer Field.
