#7 Mocs Split Doubleheader Against Tritons; Win Series 2-1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The No. 7 Florida Southern College baseball team split the doubleheader against Eckerd College on Saturday afternoon at the Turley Athletic Complex to win the series 2-1.
 
The Moccasins (18-5, 7-2 SSC) struggled at the plate in game one of the day, losing 6-3, before racking up the runs in the series finale to with 13-4. The Tritons (6-20, 2-7 SSC) stole one game from the Mocs but lost the series 2-1.
 
GAME 1: FLORIDA SOUTHERN 3, ECKERD 6
The Moccasins were outhit in the first of two games on Saturday afternoon. The Tritons finished with 16 hits to FSC's six. Eckerd kept Florida Southern scoreless through the first four innings while capitalizing on a big second inning, scoring four off RBI singles and a bases-loaded walk. The first run for the Mocs was not until the fifth inning when Jevin Relaford stole home, the first straight steal of home plate since by Keith Curcio versus Rollins on May 9, 2013.
 
Eckerd was quick to respond with a solo homer by Cabina, followed by an RBI single by Cabina in the seventh for a 6-1 lead. FSC managed two runs in the eighth off a single by Rohsean Riley, but the Mocs fell 6-3 in the day's first game. Brandon Jung was handed the loss after giving up the four runs in the second inning. He was relieved by BJ Rivera and Evan Mobley to keep the game within reach. Grant Thoroman registered a single in game one of the day, moving his hit streak to 11 games, with other FSC hits by Cleary Simpson, Ahmad Fitts, Chris McKenna, and Relaford.
 
GAME 2: FLORIDA 13, ECKERD 4
The series finale had a twist in FSC's favor, with three straight innings of four runs scored to open the game with a 12-1 lead. Eckerd had a sac fly in the first inning as their single run through six innings of work as FSC had a host of extra base hits, five total doubles, to rack up the runs. The Tritons had three runs in the seventh inning to prevent a run-rule, 12-4, as McKenna added an RBI single in the eighth to finalize the scoring, and an FSC 13-4 win to take the series, 2-1.
 
Thoroman extended his hit streak to 12 games, while McKenna led the team with three hits. Mikey Scott, Wyatt Campbell, and Relaford each had multi-hit games with seven total stolen bases in the series finale. Jordan Fox was credited with the win, his first this season off five innings and three strikeouts. He was relieved by Casey O'Dell, Colby Rice, Wyatt Clark, Aidan Kelley, and Austen Kessler. Cooper Nelson had the loss for the Tritons.
 
The Mocs will return to Lakeland to host Saint Leo University in a non-conference midweek game on Tuesday, March 18, with a 6 p.m. start before a four-game series against Wayne State University next weekend, March 21-23.
