Matthew Posts Career-Best 1,500m to Lead Men’s Track at UCF

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Florida Southern College men's track team opened up competition at the Black and Gold Invitational hosted by the University of Central Florida Friday night. Junior Anthony Matthew led the way for the Moccasins as he posted his personal best time in the 1,500m which also ranks fourth all-time for FSC.

TOP PERFORMERS
  • Junior Anthony Matthew led a group of nine Moccasins in the 1,500m Friday night. Matthew's time of 3:50.45 ranks fourth in the FSC record book while Matthew represented the top NCAA Division II finisher in the race. Sophomore Simon DeVoss, junior Chris Colavita and senior Aiden Redmond all finished within five spots of each other. DeVoss led the way in 29th with a time of 3:54.55, while Colavita came in two spots back in 31st at 3:54.88, and Redmond rounded out the group in 33rd at 3:55.97. Sophomore Dylan Bailey was the final Moccasin in the top-40 as he took 37th while crossing the line in 3:57.71. The final four finishers for FSC all finished in the forties including freshman Daniel Welling (43rd, 3:58.66), freshman Eli Zuppa (45th, 3:59.22), junior Caleb Brady (38th, 3:59.76) and graduate student Elijah De La Cerda (49th, 3:59.96).
  • Senior Seth Augustynowski was the lone FSC representative in the 5,000m as he placed 13th overall while clocking in at 15:16.02. He was the sixth NCAA Division II finisher in the event.
  • The final event of the night was the longest as nine Moccasins put their body and minds to the test in the 10,000m. Bailey, senior Joshua Kraver and sophomore Cole Summers led the way for FSC as they picked up top-10 finishes. Bailey crossed the finish in 31:21.03 to take seventh, Kraver came across in 31:29.19 to take ninth, and Summers stopped the clock at 31:35.55 for 10th. Sophomore William Canales just missed out on the top-10 in 11th with a time of 31:39.72. The final top-20 finishers for FSC were sophomore Cameron Raney who took 17th at 31:55.91 and classmate Declan Ziomek in 20th at 32:18.03. The final three FSC finishers were junior Karl van Gelder (22nd, 32:41.36), Welling (24th, 32:50.13) and graduate student Luke Dickinson (26th, 33:11.27).
 
UP NEXT:
The Moccasins will return to action tomorrow, March 22, on the final day of the Black and Gold Invitational hosted by UCF.
