DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Florida Southern College softball team dropped the opening game of the Sunshine State Conference series against Embry-Riddle falling 7-2 at the Radiology Associates Field.
The Moccasins (4-18, 1-9 SSC) were led by
Morgan Roden going 1-for-2 with one run scored followed by
Kate Mikle and
Keira Morris both going 1-for-3 as Mikle had an RBI and Morris hit a double.
The Eagles (12-7, 4-6 SSC) were led by Delaney Morgan going 2-for-2 with two runs scored, and two RBIs.
Embry-Riddle got out to an early lead scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning, making it a tough margin for Florida Southern to come back from.
The bats for FSC struggled to find the ball until the top of the fourth as Morris led off with a double to right center field. Morris advanced to third from a single from
Shelby Savitt but runners were left stranded with bases loaded after
Kelly Keating went to first on a walk.
Taking the same momentum into the top of the fifth, Roden led off with a single through the left side, and advanced into scoring position from a sacrifice bunt from
Gabby Young. With just one out, Mikle singled through the right side to bring in Roden and get a runner on the board, 6-1.
In the bottom of the inning, the Eagles added an insurance run to make it 7-1 with a one-out triple and an RBI single.
In the last opportunity for the Mocs, Mikle and Morris walked and Mikle scored from an Eagle error to close the margin 7-2, but FSC was not able to tie the game as game one went to Embry-Riddle.
Florida Southern returns to the field tomorrow against Embry-Riddle as they take on the Eagles in a doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
