MELBOURNE, Fla. – For the 16th time since 1986-87, the Florida Southern men's athletics programs have brought home the 2024-25 Sunshine State Conference Mayors' Cup for the men's division. The Florida Southern women came in sixth in the standings, just 3.5 points behind Barry and 4.5 points ahead of Rollins.
The Mayors' Cup was originally presented following the 1986-1987 academic year to recognize the annual SSC all-sports champion. The men's division recognizes competition in nine sports (one additional sport since the Moccasins won it last): soccer, cross country, basketball, swimming, golf, tennis, lacrosse, baseball, and the latest addition, outdoor track added this season. The Women's Mayors' Cup recognizes competition in 12 sports: volleyball, soccer, cross country, basketball, swimming, golf, tennis, softball, rowing, outdoor track, beach volleyball, and lacrosse, which were added in the past three years.
The men finished with 61 total points, four ahead of second-place Lynn. The last Florida Southern Mayors' Cup victory on the men's side came after the 2021-22 season. Basketball, golf, and baseball earned the most points towards the total as they each brought home 10 points for their respective second-place finishes in the conference for basketball and baseball, while golf finished in first. The nine points for cross country were next as the max points the team could achieve, as only nine members followed the outdoor track with eight points. Swimming earned six, followed by tennis with five, and lacrosse and soccer with two and one point.
Mayors' Cup scoring is based on regular season finish for sports with conference standings and championship finish for cross country, outdoor track, golf, rowing, and swimming. For sports where all schools compete, scoring begins with 11 points awarded for finishing first to one point for finishing 11th. In sports where fewer than 11 teams compete, first-place points will be awarded based on the number of teams competing. Head-to-head results will break SSC regular season standings so that points may be assigned. When head-to-head competition cannot break a tie, Mayors' Cup points will be split.
The Moccasin men now have 11 more Mayor's Cups than the next highest program on the list. Florida Southern leads with 16, followed by Tampa with five. Saint Leo, with four, followed by Barry, Florida Tech, Lynn, and Rollins, have all won the cup three times in their histories, while North Florida brought home the title twice before departing the conference, and Nova Southeastern with one.
The women, who lead the conference all-time with 12 Mayors' Cup victories, finished in sixth in the standings for 2024-25. Cross country and lacrosse led the way on the women's side with seven points after finishing second in the league for cross country and a three-way tie for first in lacrosse. Golf and tennis both took six points and brought home the second-most points among Mocs programs. Volleyball put up five points, followed by swimming with four and track and beach volleyball with three each. Basketball split with Saint Leo for 3.5 points, followed by soccer and softball with one point.
Tampa took home the cup with 73.5 points, followed by Nova Southeastern with 71. Embry-Riddle (62), Lynn (57), and Barry (50) round out the top five, while the Mocs came in sixth with 46.5 total points.
The women maintain their all-time lead in Mayors' Cup victories with 12 followed by Tampa with eight and Rollins with seven. Barry just achieved its fifth women's cup while former SSC member North Florida and Nova Southeastern are tied with two cups each, while Saint Leo rounds out the list with one cup victory.
