LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Southern College men's cross country team opened its 2025 campaign this morning at Holloway Park in Lakeland, Fla. in the Swan City Invitational. The men placed second overall as a team despite resting their top six performers. Senior
Simon DeVoss led the way with an individual fifth place finish for the Moccasins.
FSC finished just behind Sunshine State Conference rival Embry-Riddle who secured the victory with 41 points. The Mocs finished with 46 points as the two teams finished well out in front of the rest of the field. Tampa rounded out the top three with 105 points, just edging out Florida Tech and Palm Beach Atlantic who finished with 106 points and 107 points, respectively. The only other SSC program in the event was Saint Leo which took ninth overall with 261 points.
DeVoss along with sophomore
Andrew Nyland led the way as they finished back-to-back in fifth and sixth, respectively. DeVoss finished the 6K course in 18:58.8, just four tenths of a second behind fourth place. Nyland clocked in at 19:00.2, just missing out on a top-five finish.
Just three spots back in ninth was junior
William Canales who beat out two Embry-Riddle student-athletes by just three tenths of a second at 19:05.4. Just behind the two Eagle runners was junior
Declan Ziomek who took 12
th overall in 19:20.6. The final Moccasin scorer was junior
Cameron Raney who came in two spots behind Ziomek in 14
th at 19:25.7. Freshman
Parker Graham just missed out on the scoring five in his collegiate debut as he finished 15
th, just behind Raney, in 19:28.1. The final Moccasin in the top-20 was sophomore
Tyler Gaines who placed 18
th, just ahead of nine Tampa runners who placed 19
th through 27
th. Gaines completed the distance in 19:32.7.
The Moccasins will be back in action this Friday night, September 12 at 8 p.m. as they compete at the HOKA Nights of Thunder XC Fest in Tallahassee, Fla.
