LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Southern College Athletics Department is deeply saddened to share the passing of former men's soccer player James Meehan, who courageously battled illness for several years. Meehan was a member of the Moccasins from 2018 through 2021 and had his jersey retired last year in recognition of his outstanding contributions both on and off the field.
A prolific offensive presence, Meehan earned multiple honors during his career, including All-SSC Second Team recognition in 2018 and 2021, and was a two-time SSC Offensive Player of the Week. In 2018, he also secured a spot on the USL All-South Second Team. Over his four years with the Mocs, he recorded 23 goals and 10 assists, consistently ranking among the team's top scorers.
Some of his most memorable performances occurred in decisive moments, including a dramatic two-goal effort that helped FSC secure a postseason spot in 2019. In his senior campaign, he tallied nine goals and played over 1,000 minutes, closing his career as one of the program's most reliable attacking threats.
Following his collegiate career, Meehan made history by being named to Major League Soccer's SuperDraft 2022 Eligible Players List—becoming the first player in program history to achieve this recognition. He was one of only three NCAA Division II athletes included on the national list, a testament to his exceptional ability and determination.
Prior to joining Florida Southern, Meehan played at Calumet College of St. Joseph in 2017, where he earned First Team All-Chicagoland Collegiate Conference honors after leading the team in scoring. A 2013 graduate of Dame Alice Owen's School in England, he was also a standout multi-sport athlete, competing in rugby and track and field. His soccer journey included club play with Interwood/Wingate and Finchley/Southend United, as well as time with Southend United's professional academy.
Off the field, Meehan was beloved by teammates, coaches, and the Moccasin community for his relentless work ethic, competitive spirit, and kindness. His impact extended well beyond the pitch, leaving a lasting legacy that was honored with the retirement of his jersey in 2024.
Florida Southern College extends its deepest condolences to the Meehan family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing James Meehan.
