LAKELAND, Fla. — No. 10 Florida Southern College baseball (1-3) secured a decisive 10-0 win over Valdosta State University (1-3) on Tuesday night at Henley Field. This victory marked a season-high for the team, achieving 10 runs in the game. Florida Southern's pitching staff combined for a four-hit shutout, striking out 12 Valdosta State batters across eight innings in a 10-run rule game.
Florida Southern secured a commanding victory over VSU, opening the scoring in the second inning with a pair of runs.
Cory Filley singled up the middle, followed by a
Carson Brady double, setting up
Gavin Smith and
Eric Harrison Jr. for consecutive sacrifice flies, bringing the score to 2-0.
The third inning saw the Moccasins extend their lead with four more runs.
Eli Thurmond walked and scored on
Mikey Scott's double.
Ryan Jenkins and
Colby Brewington kept the momentum going before a sacrifice fly by Filley, and a two-RBI single from Harrison pushed Florida Southern ahead 6-0.
In the fifth inning, FSC added three additional runs. Smith walked and stole second, then scored on Harrison's two-run homer to left field. Thurmond, after walking and stealing two bases, scored on Scott's groundout, increasing the lead to 9-0.
Another run was tacked on in the eighth inning when
Canyon Marcewicz singled and scored on
Josh Hines' triple to right center. The Mocs completed the shutout victory, defeating the Blazers 10-0. This game also marked the second consecutive game in which the team achieved at least 10 hits, showcasing their offensive prowess.
Harrison led the team with five RBI and a home run while collecting two hits and scoring a run, all in his collegiate debut. Scott added two RBI with a double and scored a run. Jenkins contributed with a double and two walks, while also stealing a base.
Ty Bradle recorded eight strikeouts over five innings, allowing no earned runs and securing the win.
Bradle delivered a strong performance for Florida Southern, pitching 5 innings without allowing an earned run and striking out eight batters while giving up four hits and two walks.
Tanner Rollyson contributed a solid inning of relief, striking out two and allowing no hits.
Robert Tracy III and
John Essig each pitched effectively in their respective appearances, with Tracy handling a scoreless inning despite issuing two walks, and Essig striking out the sole batter he faced.
Ethan Breslin closed out, pitching two-thirds of an inning, striking out one and walking one, while allowing no hits in his appearance.
Up next for Florida Southern, they will host No. 16 Young Harris College at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at Henley Field in Lakeland, Florida.
