Reg Mungrue didn't choose athletic training on a whim—he chose it because it felt like home. Surrounded by athletes, early mornings, and the steady rhythm of practices and treatments, he found a place where his passion for sports and helping people intersected. "Overall, I enjoy athletics and helping athletes get better, so this is the perfect environment for me," he said.
Reg's journey to Florida Southern wasn't a straight line. It was a winding road that began in Canada, crossed several states, and even included a stint in professional baseball. Each stop added a new layer to his experience, shaping him into the athletic trainer he is today.
A Journey Across Borders
Reg's career began north of the border. "This is a very long path," he said. "It started in Canada, where I did my athletic training education, then off to West Texas A&M, then to upstate New York in Plattsburgh for four years." From there, he made his way to UVA Wise for another four years before taking on a series of clinical roles.
One of the most unique chapters in his career came when he joined the Toronto Blue Jays organization. "I worked within the Toronto Blue Jays organization for three years," he said. After that, he saw an opportunity at Florida Southern College, applied, and found the right fit. "The rest is history," he added.
Life in the Athletic Training Room
A typical day for Reg starts before most people's alarms go off. "Typically I have early morning practice, then off to the ATR where we treat injured athletes throughout the day," he said. It's a routine that requires energy, focus, and a genuine commitment to the athletes he serves.
For Reg, the most rewarding part of the job is simple—and powerful. "Seeing the athlete's hard work pay off, with them being able to compete and succeed in the sport they love," he said. Those moments, when months of rehab and determination lead to a successful return, remind him why he chose this path.
Teaching, Learning, and Growing
While Reg loves being there for athletes in their best and worst moments, he also finds joy in mentorship. "I most enjoy teaching athletic training students and learning from others, striving to improve on a daily basis," he said. The profession pushes him to keep getting better—one day at a time.
He wants fans to understand the heart behind athletic training. "We as athletic trainers are here for the athletes, and no one wants to see them succeed as much as we do—especially after they are not able to compete in the sport they love," he said.
Advice for the Next Generation
Reg is honest about the realities of the profession. "It can be very long and irregular hours," he said. That's why his advice to anyone interested in athletic training is straightforward: "I would volunteer with an athletic trainer and truly see if this is the path you want to pursue."
What keeps him motivated, even during the busiest stretches? "Enjoying getting to know people on a much deeper level and seeing them succeed in what they love doing," he said. For Reg Mungrue, athletic training isn't just a job—it's a calling fueled by connection, growth, and the everyday wins that happen behind the scenes.
