BOCA RATON, Fla. — Florida Southern College (11-28, 5-18 SSC) split their doubleheader against Lynn University (12-28, 5-19 SSC), securing a narrow 2-1 victory in the first game before falling 4-2 in the second at Messinger Stadium on Saturday.
FLORIDA SOUTHERN 2, LYNN 1
The Mocs clinched the win with a decisive two-run rally in the sixth inning, overcoming a mid-game deficit. The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning when Teagan Riley hit a home run to left field, giving the Fighting Knights a 1-0 lead. At the conclusion of the fourth inning, the score was 1-0 in favor of Lynn.
In the sixth inning, FSC's
Emma Lucchesi singled to right field and advanced to third after
Gigi Polanco singled and stole second.
Gabby Young grounded out, allowing Lucchesi to score and tie the game.
Hannah Lewis then hit a sacrifice fly, bringing Polanco home and putting the Moccasins in the lead. By the end of the sixth inning, Florida Southern led 2-1.
Florida Southern maintained its lead through the seventh inning, securing the victory.
Ella Torres pitched a complete game, allowing only one earned run and striking out three over 7 innings. Polanco contributed offensively with one hit and one stolen base. Lucchesi added a hit and a run, also recording a stolen base. Young drove in a run with her hit, helping to secure the win.
Torres delivered a strong performance for the Mocs, allowing only 4 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 3 batters. This outing marked her second win of the season, improving her record to 2-8. Teagan Riley delivered a standout performance for Lynn, driving in one run on a home run and adding a double to her two-hit game. Kayley Zazzali pitched a complete game for Lynn, allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out two over seven innings.
FLORIDA SOUTHERN 2, LYNN 4
In the second game, Florida Southern fell to Lynn with a final score of 4-2. The game saw Florida Southern collect six hits, including two doubles, but it could not overcome Lynn's early lead. Florida Southern faced Lynn in a game that saw the home team take an early lead. In the first inning, Lynn scored when Marina Goins crossed the plate on a single by Quinn McFadden. At the end of the inning, Lynn led 1–0.
In the second inning, Lynn extended its lead to 2–0 when Cara Willis scored on a triple by Isabella Rittle. Florida Southern got on the board in the third inning. Lucchesi singled and later scored on a single by Young, cutting the deficit to 2–1. The inning ended with Lynn still ahead, 2–1.
In the fourth inning, Florida Southern tied the game at 2–2 when
Kate Mikle doubled and scored on a double by
Alissa Kessler. However, Lynn responded with two runs in their half of the inning. McFadden scored on a fielder's choice, and Kylie Burden stole home, giving Lynn a 4–2 lead. The game concluded with Lynn maintaining its lead, resulting in a final score of 4–2.
Young recorded two hits and drove in one run in the second game, contributing significantly to the team's offensive efforts. Mikle added one run and one hit, which included a double. Kessler collected a hit and an RBI while also drawing a walk. Lucchesi finished with two hits and scored one run.
Natalie Snowden started the game for the Mocs, pitching 1 1/3 innings and allowing four hits and two earned runs while walking one batter.
Amanda Lieberman entered in relief, pitching 2 2/3 innings, giving up one hit, walking three, and striking out one.
Des Aitken closed the game with two innings, conceding two hits and striking out three batters, with 24 of her 32 pitches resulting in strikes.
Isabella Rittle delivered a strong performance for Lynn with two RBIs, highlighted by a triple. Quinn McFadden also made a significant impact with two hits, an RBI, and a stolen base. Pitcher Gabriella Lindsey secured a complete game, allowing two earned runs over seven innings while recording one strikeout.
In their next game, Florida Southern will travel to face Nova Southeastern on Thursday, April 30. The game will take place at AD Griffin Sports Complex in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with the first pitch set for 7 p.m. ET.
