EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Bellarmine's Braydon Hobbs rebounded his own missed shot and made a layup with six seconds left to give the Knights a 62-60 upset win over the third-ranked Moccasins here Friday night at Southern Indiana's Bill Joergens Memorial Tournament.
The Moccasins called a timeout with four seconds on the clock and managed to get off a last-second three-pointer by Braxton Williams at the buzzer, but it was no good and the Moccasins suffered their second loss in eight games this season. Bellarmine improved to 2-0.
The game was close throughout, as neither team ever had a double-digit lead and the score was tied 12 times. A layup by Rob Eldridge had tied the game at 59-59 with 2:06 to go. Bellarmine regained the lead when Kevin Allen hit one of two free throws to go up 60-59 with 1:35 left. Rion Rayfield was fouled with 1:28 remaining, but made just one of two free throws to tie the game at 60-60.
With less than a minute remaining, Allen missed a three-pointer and Brandon Jenkins grabbed the rebound. The Mocs called a timeout with 44 seconds left, but turned the ball over with 34 seconds left, giving Bellarmine the chance for Hobbs' game-winning shot.
Hobbs led the Knights with 13 points and six rebounds. Eldridge led the Moccasins with 14 points. Jenkins was the only other Moccasin in double figures with 10 points. John Thompson and Zach Smith led FSC in rebounding with eight each.
Each team shot an identical 36.7 percent from the field. The Moccasins were 18-31 from the free throw line, while Bellarmine was 13-22. FSC won the rebound battle 42-40.
The Moccasins play Southern Indiana Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. (CT).
