15th-Ranked Barry Puts Clamps on Moccasins' Offense

MIAMI SHORES - Fifteenth-ranked Barry scored the first seven points of the game and led from start to finish, downing the Moccasins 61-53 Saturday at Miami Shores in a game that was nationally-televised on the CBS College Sports Network.

It was the Moccasins' first game against a nationally-ranked team since the 2006-07 season when they lost to No. 18 ranked Florida Tech in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament.

The Buccaneers held the Moccasins, who lead the Sunshine State Conference in scoring, to a season-low 53 points, 27.3 points below their season average, and a season-low 33.3 field goal percentage. The Moccasins made just five three-pointers, also a season low.

Shooting 56.0 percent from the field in the first half, Barry (12-2, 3-0 SSC) led 40-26 at halftime. The Moccasins shot just 31.0 percent in the first half. Barry cooled off to just 25.9 percent shooting in the second half, while the Moccasins improved to 35.7 percent, but FSC was unable to overtake the Buccaneers. Four times in the second half the Moccasins were able to close the gap to seven points, but they never could get any closer.

Megan Dzikas led the Moccasins with 16 points. Chelsea Johnson, the Moccasins' leading scorer with an 18.8 average and the SSC leader in three-point goals made with 30, was held to 11 points and did not attempt a three-pointer in the game. Tanja Speaker also had 11 points off the bench.

Senior center Emer Foley, who had missed 10 straight games due to a back injury, saw her first action since Nov. 16. She played 11 minutes and scored four points and had one rebound.

Mariesa Greene led Barry with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

The Moccasins (10-3, 2-2 SSC) play Eckerd Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Jenkins Field House.
