Johnson Hits for 37 Points as Mocs Top First-Place Tars

Box Score

LAKELAND - Chelsea Johnson poured in a career-high 37 points to lead the Moccasins to a 78-69 win over 11th-ranked Rollins here Saturday night at Jenkins Field House.

Johnson broke her own record for three-pointers in a game, as she connected on eight, en route to matching the third-best single-game scoring performance in Lady Mocs' history. Kim Disbro's 43 points against Rollins in 1987 is the school record and Lucresia West's career scoring high was 39 points and she also had a 37-point game. Johnson's previous scoring high was 30 points last season against Tampa and Eckerd and her previous record for three-pointers was six against Lynn and Eckerd.

In Saturday's game, she had 14 points at halftime, as the Moccasins enjoyed a 36-30 advantage over the Tars, then produced a sensational 23-point second half, as the Moccasins shot 54 percent from the field in the period.

Rollins lost for just the second time in 19 games this season and saw its Sunshine State Conference record dip to 7-2. The Tars outrebounded the Moccasins 41-25, but committed 25 turnovers, which led to 25 Moccasin points.

In addition to Johnson's performance, Tanja Speaker fired in a career-high 17 points off the bench and Emer Foley added 11 points, as the Moccasins snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 14-5 overall, 5-4 in the SSC.

Rollins got as close as seven points, 57-50, with 9:55 remaining, but the Moccasins responded with eight straight points, including a pair of three-pointers by Johnson, to build a 15-point margin and the Tars could get no closer than seven the rest of the way.

The Moccasins will travel to Melbourne Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. SSC game against Florida Tech.
