ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Megan Dzikas' 24 points led a quartet of Moccasins scoring in double figures, as FSC evened its record at 1-1 with an 81-77 road win over Lewis here Monday night.
Dzikas' final two points, a pair of free throws with 24 seconds remaining, proved to be decisive, as they gave the Moccasins a 79-71 lead. Lewis rallied on six straight points by Jenny Turpel, but she missed a free throw with two seconds left. Tanja Speaker was fouled on the rebound and sank a pair of free throws to preserve the Moccasin victory.
In addition to her 24 points, Dzikas matched her career high in rebounds with nine and delivered four assists. Chelsea Johnson scored 16 points, 13 in the second half, to raise her career point total to 1,083 and move into the 13th place on the FSC career scoring list. Nicolle DiRaimo posted her first double-double since her freshman season with a 13-point, 10-rebound effort and Michaela Hawley tossed in 12 points. That was enough to offset a 36-point effort by Turpel.
The Moccasins trailed 40-37 at halftime. With the game tied at 53-53, FSC went on a 9-0 run to take a 62-53 lead at the 12:32 mark. Lewis answered with a 10-0 run of its own to regain the lead with 7:48 left. With Lewis up 71-70 with 3:28 to go, the Moccasins made their final run, getting a three-pointer from Johnson, a rebound basket by DiRaimo, a basket by Hawley and Dzikas' two free throws to take a 79-71 lead that withstood the late rally by Turpel.
The Moccasins play this weekend at the Sleep Inn Classic at Saint Leo. They'll meet Puerto Rico-Bayamon Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Georgia Southwestern Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
