Mocs Win Fifth Straight, But Without Johnson

LAKELAND - The Moccasins posted their fifth straight win, an 82-60 decision over Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras, Wednesday night at Jenkins Field House and they did it without leading scorer Chelsea Johnson.

Johnson, who had scored 38 and 33 points in the Moccasins'€™ previous two games, played just nine minutes and was scoreless for the first time in her FSC career. She came out of the game in the first half after suffering a slight left hamstring pull, but the injury is not believed to be serious However, she sat out the rest of the game as a precautionary measure. The injury ended two impressive streaks Johnson had compiled. She had scored in double figures in 32 straight games and had made at least one three-point field goal in 20 straight games.

To make up for Johnson's absence, the Moccasins received points from 11 different players in the game, with eight of them scoring at least seven points. Michaela Hawley led the way with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Freshmen Emily Grayson and Alexis Hochstetler combined for 21 points off the bench, with Grayson scoring 11, including three three-pointers and Hochstetler 10. Krystian Thompson scored a career-high nine points off the bench. Danielle Walsh, who made her first career start, scored eight points, as did Nicolle DiRaimo off the bench. Megan Dzikas and Tanja Speaker each scored seven points.

The Moccasins (5-1) scored the first four points of the game and led from start to finish. They shot 50 percent from the field in the first half and led 39-25 at halftime. Their lead was never less than 11 in the second half.

FSC is idle until Dec. 5, when it opens Sunshine State Conference action on the road at Barry.
