Lady Mocs Open 2009-10 Season In Midwest

A trip to the Midwest to meet two first-time opponents awaits the Lady Mocs, as they open their 2009-10 season this weekend.

Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. (ET), Coach Jarrod Olson's club will open the season in Kenosha, Wis., against Wisconsin-Parkside. Monday night they'll be in Romeoville, Ill., to play Lewis at 8 p.m. (ET).

The Moccasins return four starters from last season's 18-10 club, led by junior guard Chelsea Johnson. A two-time first-team All-Sunshine State Conference selection, Johnson has led the team in scoring each of her two seasons at FSC, averaging 18.6 each year.

Sophomore Megan Dzikas became the third straight Moccasin to be named SSC Freshman of the Year last season after averaging 13.3 points and leading the team in assists (3.6).

Michaela Hawley joined Dzikas on the SSC All-Freshman Team last season. She averaged 12.0 points and 5.8 rebounds, while leading the team in field percentage (51.5 percent).

Senior Nicolle DiRaimo, the 2007 SSC Freshman of the Year recipient, is back for her final season after averaging 7.1 and 5.5 rebounds a year ago.

Both Moccasin opponents are members of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Wisconsin-Parkside returns all five starters from last season's 18-10 team. Amanda Gibson led the team in scoring with a 16.3 average and in assists with a 4.8 average, while Jadee Rooney averaged 12.2 points and led the team in three-pointers with 55 and Brittany Beyer averaged 12.1 points and a team-best 6.9 rebounds.

Lewis returns four starters from last season's 16-13 squad. Jenny Turpel led the Flyers with an 18.5 scoring average and also topped the team in rebounds, averaging 6.9. Devon Carbaugh averaged 10.8 points and 6.4 rebounds, while Kelly Monaco connected on 71 three-pointersa and averaged 10.6 points.

The Moccasins have no previous women's basketball meetings with either of their first two opponents.
