Senka Softic tied the FSC career record for singles wins with a straight-set win at No. 1 singles to help the Lady Mocs win their Sunshine State Conference Tournament opener Thursday, 6-2, over Nova Southeastern.
Softic, ranked eighth in Division II singles, topped Elisa Leeder, 6-1, 6-0, for her 72nd career singles win, matching the record set by Kim Smith (1983-86). Softic and doubles partner Agnese Rozite, ranked 15th in Division II, recorded an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles to give Softic her 65th career doubles win, one short of the FSC career record of 66 held by Betsey Broadwater (1982-85).
The win improved the Moccasins' record to 17-2 and sends them into Friday's semifinals against second-seeded Lynn at noon.
After the Moccasins won two of the three doubles matches, Softic and Andrea Arguello won their singles matches to put FSC ahead 4-1, then Nora Baertschi won the clinching match at No. 5 singles with a 6-3, 6-2 victory.  Because Veronika Kovacikova was in the middle of the final point of her match when Baertschi won the clincher, Kovacikova was allowed to finish her match as well.
The other three first-round matches Thursday all went to the higher seeded teams by scores of 5-0. Barry and Rollins will meet in the other semifinal match at 11:30 a.m. The back draw matches at 2 p.m. will send Eckerd against Florida Tech and Saint Leo against Nova Southestern.
Saturday's championship is set for 11:30 a.m., followed by the third-place match at noon and the fifth-place and seventh-place matches at 2 p.m.
All of the matches are being played at the Beerman Tennis Facility on Edgewood Drive.
