Florida Southern's Ashley Holmes was among the first Sunshine State Conference award winners announced by the league office on Tuesday, as the Moccasin defender was named the SSC Defensive Player-of-the-Week in men's soccer. The redshirt sophomore helped lead Florida Southern to a pair of season-opening wins in North Carolina, giving the Mocs a 2-0 start to the 2010 season.
After missing all of last year due to injury, Holmes stepped back into the center of the Moccasin defense last week and helped Florida Southern earn a 2-0 win over Mount Olive followed by a 6-1 win over St. Andrews. The shutout of Mount Olive was the first for Florida Southern since early in 2008, and the Mocs allowed just five shots in the match despite playing a man down for the entire second half. In their next game the Mocs allowed just nine shots, giving the defense back-to-back games in single digits, something else that hadn't happened since 2008.
Florida Southern will go for its third straight win on Tuesday night when it hosts Clearwater Christian College in its home opener.
