Webber Wins Match on Final Point in Mocsâ?? Season Opener

BABSON PARK - Round five of the annual father-son men's tennis matchup between Florida Southern and Webber International went down to the final swing of the racket for the second year in a row. Only this time, it was the Warriors who came from behind for the win. Marcel Schmitt's come-from-behind win of his own in three sets gave Webber its final point and a 5-4 win over 23rd-ranked Florida Southern.

Now in his fifth year as the Moccasins' head coach, Trey Heath has opened four of them against the team coached by his father Bill Heath. The first four meetings all went to Florida Southern, including last year's match in Lakeland that the Moccasins won 5-4 with a 3-set win by C.J. Johnson in the final singles match of the day. This time around, the Moccasins (0-1) were seemingly in control with a 4-1 lead before the Warriors (1-0, ranked #18 in the NAIA poll) won four straight singles matches to earn the win.

Early on, it was Ivan Marevic and Jorge Gutierrez who gave Florida Southern the lead with an 8-1 win at #1 doubles, and Benoit Paradis and Carl Lundberg followed with an 8-4 win at the #2 doubles position.

After the Warriors got on the board with a win at #3 doubles, the Moccasins picked up two points when Emanuel Lueber (6-1, 6-0) and Paradis (6-2, 6-1) both picked up wins in singles play. The Warriors though came right back with two straight set wins on their side, and trailed only 4-3 at that point in the match.

At the #1 singles slot, Webber's Daniel Spurny needed a tie-breaker to defeat Marevic in the first set, but he won the second, 6-1, to tie the match at four apiece. That left Schmitt and Lundberg still playing after they'd split their first two sets, with each winning by two games. Schmitt ended up winning the third set by the same 6-4 margin to give Webber International its first win over Florida Southern since 1999.

The Moccasins will continue their season-opening weekend with an 11:00 a.m. match on Saturday at 2nd-ranked Barry.
