Forced to play catch-up most of the game, the Moccasins came up short in their bid to reach the NCAA South Regional Championship game, losing to Valdosta State, 67-63, in their semifinal contest Saturday at Rollins.
The loss ended the Moccasins' season at 24-7. Valdosta State improved to 22-7 going into Monday's title game.
The Lady Blazers took a quick 4-0 lead in the first 90 seconds of the game and except for three ties and one brief Moccasin lead, at 7-6, maintained the advantage all the way to halftime, where they led 33-27.
The Moccasins pulled even three more times in the second half and finally grabbed the lead, 46-43, on a three-pointer by Megan Dzikas with 10:32 remaining. Valdosta State then went on a 10-0 run in the next four minutes to build a 53-46 advantage with 6:18 to go and the Moccasins could get no closer than four points the rest of the way.
Michaela Hawley led all scorers with 22 points in the final game of her four-year Moccasin career. That brought her career point total to 1,801, which puts her fifth on the FSC career scoring list. Her season total of 619 points is the second-best in Moccasin history, trailing only Kim Disbro's 717 points in the 1986-87 season. Her final career rebound total of 759 puts her ninth on the Moccasin career rebounding list. Only four other players in Moccasin history - Tarra Blackwell, Lucresia West, Keisha Richardson and Disbro - are ranked in the top ten in both career scoring and career rebounding at FSC.
Dzikas scored 17 in her final game as a Moccasin to finish with 1,368 career points, good for 10th place on the FSc career scoring list. She ranks second in career three-pointers made with 239, second in career three-point attempts with 635 and second in career assists with 515.
Danielle Walsh, who enjoyed the best season of her four-year career as a senior, scored six points to finish with 375 career points. The Moccasins' fourth senior, Sofie Lundberg, who played two seasons at FSC, did not score in her final game.
