LAKELAND â€" Sophomore Magda Riutort continued her run through the tournament with a straight-set quarterfinal win over Giovana Patitucci of West Florida, and junior Sabine Goge will join her in the semifinals of the double competition, keeping Florida Southern alive for two titles in the USTA/ITA Women’s South Region Championships.
After winning one match on Thursday, the 4th-seeded Riutort came back Friday for two more wins, including a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Elissa Decampli of Rollins in the round of 16. She followed that with a 7-5, 6-0 win in her quarterfinal match against Patitucci. That sends her into Saturday’s semifinals against one of the #9 seeds, Olivia Matuszak of Barry. Matuszak knocked off 2nd-seeded Ioana Ivan of Lynn in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-1.
Goge, who was seeded #5 in the tournament, also advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Adrianna Daszkiewicz of Saint Leo, 6-1, 7-5. In her second match of the day, however, the junior fell to top-seeded Val Confalonieri of Lynn, 6-2, 6-1.
In the consolation bracket, sophomore Christie Nunnemann advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to Kim Przeslowski of Lynn, 6-4, 6-1. That leaves only Riutort alive for Florida Southern in singles play.
In doubles competition, Riutort and Goge will compete together on Saturday after they survived the quarterfinals with an 8-6 victory over Kristina Huba and Stephanie Dohner of Florida Tech. The #2 seeded Moccasin teammates will take on Andrea Berkova and Kim Przeslowski of Lynn, who upset 5th-seeded Charlotte Cote and Alex Johansson of Nova Southeastern in their quarterfinal match.
Action gets underway Saturday morning with doubles play at 8:30 a.m., at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center on the campus of Florida Southern College.
The singles and doubles champions of the South Regional Championship will advance to the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships on Oct. 11-14 at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala. The USTA/ITA National Small College Championships are comprised of the eight regional champions (and/or at-large selections) from NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community Colleges.
