LAKELAND, Fla. — No. 8 Florida Southern College women's tennis (11-3) edged past no. 4 Nova Southeastern University (10-4) with a 4-3 victory on Friday at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center. Florida Southern secured the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions, setting the stage for a closely contested singles competition.
Florida Southern secured the doubles point against Nova Southeastern with victories on two courts. At No. 2 doubles, Nova Southeastern's Noemie Dadoun and Chloe Henderson defeated
Emily Jennewein and
Ronja Scheuermann, 6-1. Florida Southern responded at No. 3 doubles, where
Annika Berrendorf and
Jolie Miller captured a 6-2 win over Jana Boegner and Priscila Janikian. The doubles point was clinched at No. 1 doubles as
Kennedi Brown and
Josie Holderbach edged past Kristyna Hranacova and Katja Markus, 7-6(4).
In singles play, Nova Southeastern's Kristyna Hranacova, ranked No. 1, quickly leveled the dual score with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over 23rd ranked Holderbach at No. 1 singles. Florida Southern regained the lead when Berrendorf secured a straight-set win at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-4, over Boegner.
At No. 6 singles,
Diana Volkov extended Florida Southern's advantage with a 6-4, 7-6(2) victory against Janikian. Nova Southeastern responded at No. 2 singles, where 42nd ranked Markus defeated Scheuermann, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2, bringing the dual score to 3-2 in favor of Florida Southern.
Nova Southeastern then tied the overall score at 3-3 with Dadoun's three-set win over Miller at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. The decisive match came at No. 3 singles, where 48th ranked Jennewein of Florida Southern outlasted 25th ranked Henderson, 0-6, 7-6(6), 7-6(8), securing the clinch point in dramatic fashion, overcoming a 6-2 deficit in the tiebreak after earning nine match points and saving four match points to seal the victory.securing the dual match victory for the Mocs with a final score of 4-3.
The next challenge for Florida Southern College comes as it travels to face Palm Beach Atlantic University on Saturday, March 28 at 4 p.m. at the Mitch Gornto Tennis Center in West Palm Beach, Florida.
