TAMPA, Fla. — No. 8 Florida Southern College women's tennis (13-3) defeated No. 40 University of Tampa (6-10) with a decisive 6-1 victory on Tuesday at the Naimoli and Young Complex. The Moccasins secured the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions and claimed five of six singles matches.
Florida Southern secured the doubles point with victories at No. 3 doubles and No. 2 doubles.
Annika Berrendorf and
Jolie Miller quickly overcame Nicole Casas and Mia Zorrilla, 6-2, at No. 3 doubles, followed by
Emily Jennewein and
Ronja Scheuermann's 6-4 win over Karine Kulidjian and Ida Axelsson at No. 2 doubles. Despite
Kennedi Brown and
Josie Holderbach's close contest at No. 1 doubles, they fell to Rebecca Presley and L Eriksson Sundling, 7-6(3).
In singles, the Mocs extended their lead with a dominant performance. Berrendorf put Florida Southern ahead with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Karine Kulidjian at No. 4 singles.
Diana Volkov followed, defeating Gabi Sanchez 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 singles, giving the Mocs a commanding 3-0 lead. The Spartans picked up their sole singles point when Ida Axelsson defeated Miller 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.
The clinching point for Florida Southern came from Holderbach, ranked No. 23, who secured a 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 victory over No. 67 Rebecca Presley at No. 1 singles. Jennewein, ranked No. 48, added another point with a thrilling 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (16-14) win against L Eriksson Sundling at No. 3 singles. Scheuermann capped the match with her win at No. 2 singles, defeating Nicole Casas 7-5, 4-6, 6-2. Florida Southern concluded the matchup with a decisive 6-1 final score.
Berrendorf recorded a win at No. 4 singles and added a victory in No. 3 doubles. Holderbach posted a win at No. 1 singles, contributing to the team's success. Jennewein secured a win in No. 3 singles and teamed with Scheuermann to clinch No. 2 doubles. Scheuermann also tallied a win at No. 2 singles, demonstrating her effectiveness in both singles and doubles play.
