Box Score
PENSACOLA â€" After picking up five assists in his team’s first two games of the season, Niall McCabe did all of the goal scoring for Young Harris on Friday in its match against Florida Southern. The senior forward scored once early, once just before halftime, and added one more goal late in the game, leading the Mountain Lions to a 3-1 victory over the Moccasins.
Florida Southern (0-2-1) received its scoring from Luke Jenner, who put the Mocs on the board in the 85th minute with help from Adam Hansjons, but by then, McCabe had already completed his hat trick. He gave Young Harris (3-0) a 1-0 lead 13 minutes into the game after taking a pass on the left side of the box from Alex Rivera, and connecting on a shot to the far side of the net for his second goal of the season. McCabe then scored again nine seconds before halftime after Kyle Ball wound up with a loose ball near the 18-yard line and again fed it into the box for a shot.
Though Young Harris had other scoring chances early in the second half, the Florida Southern defense prevented the Mountain Lions from scoring again until the 79th minute when McCabe struck for his final goal of the match. This time the attack came from the right side of the box, with Ilija Ilic providing the final pass that allowed McCabe to hit a running shot from inside the 6-yard box.
Hansjons then helped the Moccasins score their goal in the 85th minute, gaining possession in the front third and finding Jenner open in the box for a shot that beat goalkeeper Wezly Barnard. It was Jenner’s first goal of the season after missing the first two games.
Barnard made two saves for Young Harris and Andres Guzman made three for Florida Southern. Niklas Davidsson also saved a goal for the Moccasins when Samuel Mansour put a header on target after a corner kick, only to have the FSC center back head it out of danger. Later, with the Mocs still trailing only 2-0, Davidsson nearly cut the deficit in half with a hard shot from outside the box that tested Barnard, but was ultimately corralled.
Florida Southern will complete its trip to Pensacola on Sunday with a game against West Florida scheduled to kick off at 4:00 EST.
