ST. PETERSBURG - 17th-ranked Florida Southern continued Sunshine State Conference action here Wednesday as the Moccasins posted a 9-0 shutout victory over Eckerd College at the Bullard Tennis Center.
With the win, the Mocs improve to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the SSC, while Eckerd fell to 0-3 overall and 0-3 in the SSC.
In doubles action, the Mocs won all three matches, including its 12th-ranked No. 1 team of sophomore Magda Riutort (Petra, Spain) and junior Sabine Goge (Cesis, Latvia) posting an 8-1 win and its No. 3 team of junior Crystal Copeland (Marietta, Ga.) and sophomore Pamela Paradis (Quebec City, Quebec) picking up an 8-2 win at the No. 2 spot. Its No. 2 doubles team of junior Victoria Spagnuola (Andover, Mass.) and sophomore Christie Nunnemann (St. Simmons Island, Ga.) rallied to win 8-6 to complete the sweep.
Meanwhile, in singles action, the Mocs only difficult matches were at the No. 4 and No. 6 spots as the Mocs won both of those in third set tiebreakers. The other four matches were won in straight sets by the Mocs.
At the No. 4 spot, junior Laura Wichmann (Waldshut-Tiengen, Germany) lost the first set, 6-4, before earning a 6-3 win in the second set and then collecting a 10-4 win in the tiebreaker, while Copeland needed a third-set tiebreaker at the No. 6 spot against Amanda Teets. Copeland won the first set, 6-4, before falling 7-6 in the second set and then winning a 13-11 marathon in the tiebreaker.
The Mocs will return to action on Friday, Feb. 22 as they travel to West Palm Beach for a 3 p.m. non-conference match at Palm Beach Atlantic.
