Mocs Snap Three-Match Losing Skid, Post Home Win Over Wayne State

LAKELAND - 20th-ranked Florida Southern returned to action after a five-day layoff here Monday afternoon by posting an 8-1 win over 45th-ranked Wayne State (MI) University at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.

With the win, the Moccasins improve to 3-5 on the season and snap a three-match losing skid, while WSU fell to 18-5 on the year.

In Monday's match, the Mocs opened by sweeping all three doubles matches to win the first three points. The hardest fought battle in doubles came at the No. 2 spot sophomore Olivia Spagnuolo (Andover, Mass.) and her older sister, junior Victoria Spagnuolo (Andover, Mass.) defeated WSU's No. 2 team of Alex Poissant and Julia Kamenko, 9-7. The Mocs won the other two matches, 8-3 at No. 1 and 8-2 at No. 2.

Meanwhile, in singles play, the Mocs won five of the six spots, with WSU collecting its only win at the No. 4 spot Anne Li Briand defeated sophomore Christie Nunnemann (St. Simmons Island, Ga.) in a three sets as Nunnemann won the first, 6-4, but Li Briand came back to post a 6-2, 6-4 in the final two sets to earn her team's only point in the match.

In addition to the match at the No. 4, three other singles matches went to three sets as 13th-ranked sophomore Magda Riutort came back to win at the No. 1 spot over WSU's Yahsha Moore (3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (10-4)), while junior Joalis Dominguez (Vero Beach, Fla.) earned a win at the No. 3 spot over Poissant (6-2, 4-6, 6-4) and junior Laura Wichmann (Waldshut-Tiengen, Germany) won at the No. 5 spot over WSU's Manu Materak (7-5, 3-6, 6-3).

The Mocs will remain at home as they host Bluefield State (W.V.) in a 3 p.m. dual match on Wednesday, March 13 at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
