Mocs Roll Past Bluefield State at Home

LAKELAND - Florida Southern continued its seven-match homestand here Wednesday afternoon by rolling to a 9-0 non-conference victory over Bluefield State at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.

With the victory, the 20th-ranked Moccasins run its win streak to two straight and improve to 4-5 on the season, while Bluefield State falls to 6-9 overall on the year.

On the afternoon, the Mocs allowed the Lady Blues to win only four points in the match as five of the victories were shutouts. It was the Mocs second shutout win of the season as they also blanked Eckerd (9-0) in a Sunshine State Conference match on Feb. 20 in St. Petersburg.

In doubles action, the Mocs didn't allow a point as all three of its teams posted identical 8-0 victories.

Meanwhile, in singles play, the Mocs sealed the win with a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 4 spot by sophomore Christie Nunnemann (St. Simmons Island, Ga.) over BSC's Marta Briales. BSU also won a point at the No. 1 singles spot as sophomore Magda Riutort (Petra, Spain) won 6-0, 6-1 over BSC's Marijana Gjorgevska and the Lady Blues won two points at the No. 3 spot as junior Joalis Dominguez (Vero Beach, Fla.) defeated BSC's Tafadzwa Mawisire in straight sets (6-0, 6-2).

The other two singles matches were shutouts as junior Sabine Goge (Cesis, Latvia) won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot and sophomore Olivia Spagnuolo (Andover, Mass.) won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot. Junior Crystal Copeland (Marietta, Ga.) was the other winner as she won at the No. 6 spot over Dragana Tomic as Tomic retired after trailing 1-0 in the second set. Copeland won 6-0 in the first set.

FSC's homestand continues on Thursday, March 14 as they host 40th-ranked Midwestern State in a 3:30 p.m. match at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
