LAKELAND - The 20th-ranked Florida Southern Moccasins earned its third straight win here Thursday afternoon as they posted a 7-2 win over 40th-ranked Midwestern State at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
Much like the men's team, the Mocs were playing its third match in five days and will play one more match on Friday before taking a 10-day break from competing.
With Thursday's win, FSC moves back to .500 on the season at 5-5, while MSU fell to 6-4 with the loss.
FSC opened Thursday's action by posting two wins in doubles as its No. 1 team of sophomore Magda Riutort (Petra, Spain) and junior Sabine Goge (Cesis, Latvia) defeated MSU's top team of Taylor Coffman and Saria Adhikary, 8-6 and the Mocs also won at the No. 3 spot as junior Laura Wichmann (Waldshut-Tiengen, Germany) and junior Joalis Dominguez (Vero Beach, Fla.) won 8-4. The Mustangs prevented an FSC sweep with an 8-2 win at the No. 2 spot.
Meanwhile in singles play, the Mocs won five of the six matches played as MSU's only win came at the No. 6 spot as junior Victoria Spagnuolo (Andover, Mass.) fell to Fatima Clementino, 7-5, 6-1. One Moc, sophomore Olivia Spagnuolo (Andover, Mass.) needed a third set to win at the No. 5 spot and 11th-ranked Riutort needed a tiebreaker in the second set to defeat Coffman at the No. 1 spot. Riutort won 6-2, 7-6 (7-3), while Olivia Spagnuolo won 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
The Mocs will return to action on Friday, March 15 as they host Bentley in a 3 p.m. match at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
