LAKELAND â€" Florida Southern Men’s Tennis ended their regular season schedule with a 7-2 victory over NAIA opponent Webber International, here, Wednesday afternoon at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center; clinching match victory for the Moccasins was senior Robbie Palmiotto (Boca Raton, Fla.), who was playing in his final match as a collegiate player.
The Mocs had to work for their 2-1 victory in doubles action even though Jorge Gutierrez (Madrid, Spain) and Carl Lundberg (Stocksund, Sweden) won easily at No. 3 doubles by a score of 8-4. The No. 1 doubles team of Emanuel Lueber (Tiengen, Germany) and Benoit Paradis (Quebec City, Quebec) narrowly defeated the Warriors’ No. 1 team 9-8 (7-4).
At singles FSC made quick work of Webber International to get to that magic number needed to clinch the match as Lueber won his match at No. 1 singles after his opponent retired early in set one. Paradis defeated Nickolay Kodinov 6-2, 6-3 right as Palmiotto almost shutout his opponent (6-0, 6-1) at No. 6 to earn his last victory on the tennis courts as a Moccasin and clinch the match for FSC.Â
Up 5-1 overall, the Mocs picked up victories at No. 4 singles as Vladimir Barabash (Puhovka, Ukraine) defeated his opponent using a super tie breaker, 3-6, 6-0, 11-9 and Lundberg won at No. 3 singles when his opponent retired in the super tie breaker with Lundberg leading 7-5, 1-6, 6-2.
The Moccasins will head into Sunshine State Conference Tournament play on April 18 with a 13-8 overall record and a 2-4 record in the SSC. With the loss Webber falls to 10-10 on the season.Â
