MELBOURNE - Florida Southern closed out its 2013 spring regular season schedule here Wednesday afternoon by posting a 7-2 victory over 20th-ranked Florida Tech in Sunshine State Conference action at the Fee Avenue Courts.
The victory extended the 26th-ranked Moccasins' win streak to 13 straight matches and improve their record to 15-5 overall and 4-4 in the SSC, while Tech falls to 14-8 overall and 2-6 in the SSC. In addition, the win was the Mocs second straight against a nationally ranked foe and its seventh over a ranked foe during its current 13-match winning streak.
Over its last five regular season matches, the Mocs allowed its five opponents to score just six points, as they shut out four of the six foes and held West Florida to four points in its 5-4 win in Pensacola on Sunday and limiting the Panthers to just two points on Wednesday.
In Wednesday's regular season finale, the Mocs opened by taking two of the three doubles matches as its No. 1 team of sophomore Magda Riutort (Petra, Spain) and junior Sabine Goge (Cesis, Latvia) defeated Tech's Kristina Huba and Stephanie Dohner, 8-6, while its No. 3 team of juniors Joalis Dominguez (Vero Beach, Fla.) and Laura Wichmann (Waldshut-Tiengen, Germany) posted an 8-5 win over Tech's Katie Close and Chloe Chanley. The Panthers prevented a Mocs sweep in doubles as it No. 2 team defeated sophomore Olivia Spagnuolo (Andover, Mass.) and junior Victoria Spagnuolo (Andover, Mass.) by a score of 8-6.
Two of the six singles matches went to three sets, while one of the singles matches was decided by a third-set tiebreaker after the Mocs had decided the match.
The Mocs picked up wins in singles at No. 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6, while Tech's only point came at the No. 3 singles spot as Chanley defeated Dominguez in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-4, 6-7, 12-10. One of the most impressive singles wins came at the No. 1 spot as 12th-ranked Riutort needed three sets to defeat fifth-ranked Huba. Riutort won the first set, 6-2, but Huba tied the match after posting a 6-2 win in the second set before Riutort earned a 6-2 win in the third set to post her 13th consecutive victory and improve to 16-2 this season at the No. 1 spot.
FSC's other wins in singles came at the No. 2 spot as 30th-ranked Goge defeated Dohner in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, while sophomore Christie Nunnemann (St. Simmons Island, Ga.) won her fourth straight match with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 win at the No. 4 spot over Close. Olivia Spagnuolo posted a straight set (6-1, 7-5) win at the No. 5 spot over Charlotte Fahnehjelm and Wichmann earned a straight set (6-0, 6-1) win at the No. 6 spot over Tech's Abbey Keister.   ÂÂ
The Mocs will next return to action on April 18-20 as they travel to Boca Raton to compete in the 2013 SSC Championships. The winner of the SSC Tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. ÂÂ
