Mocs Win Third Straight Match, Shuts Out 42nd-Ranked Delta State

PENSACOLA - Florida Southern continued its weekend slate of matches against Gulf South Conference schools here Saturday afternoon by posting a 5-0 win over 43rd-ranked Delta State at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex on the University of West Florida campus.

With the win, the 29th-ranked Moccasins improved to 12-7 on the season and ran its win streak to three straight matches, while the Statesmen, who are ranked eighth in the latest NCAA D-II South Regional poll, fell to 9-4 on the year. The Mocs are ranked seventh in that same South Region poll.

Saturday's win was a hard-fought affair that was called after the Mocs had secured the necessary five points to win the match. When the match was decided, DSU was leading in two of the singles matches and one of them was going to a third set, while the other one FSC won the first set and held a lead in the second set.

In doubles action on Saturday, the Mocs picked up three wins against the Statesmen, including its regionally eighth-ranked No. 1 team of sophomore Emanuel Lueber (Tiengen, Germany) and junior Benoit Paradis (Quebec City, Quebec) winning 8-2 over DSU's No. 1 team of Florian Mondoloni and Guillaume Lacour. The Mocs won the other two doubles matches by identical 8-4 scores.

Meanwhile, in singles action, the Mocs sealed the victory with wins at the No. 3 spot by sophomore Carl Lundberg (Stocksund, Sweden) and at the No. 4 spot by junior Vladimir Barabash (Puhovka, Ukraine).

At the No. 3 spot, Lundberg, who won his third straight singles match, defeated DSU's Tobias Rausch in straight sets (6-1, 6-3), while Barabash defeated DSU's Clement Depreeuw (6-1, 6-4) at the No. 4 spot.

The other four matches were left unfinished, as Lueber lost the first set (6-2) to Mondoloni and was trailing 5-2 in the second set, while Paradis lost in a tiebreaker in the first set (7-6) to Lacour, but won 6-0 in the second set. Sophomore Charles Garneau (L'ancienne-Lorette, Quebec) won the first set (6-1) over Sebastien Rajaonary, but was trailing 5-4 in the second set at the No. 6 spot and junior Jorge Gutierrez (Madrid, Spain) won the first set (6-4) at the No. 5 spot over Jean-Michael Limery and was leading 4-2 in the second set when Lundburg clinched the match for the Mocs.

FSC will conclude its three-match trip to Pensacola on Sunday, April 7 as they face No. 3 ranked West Florida at 12:30 p.m. EST.
