Moore Scores Twice, Chowansky Once, but Lynn Comes Back for 3-3 Tie With Moccasins

Box Score

BOCA RATON â€" First-half goals by Kara Moore and Margot Chowansky gave Florida Southern a 2-0 lead Saturday afternoon at Lynn, and well into the second half, it was still enough to give the Moccasins total control of the game. In the span of 15 minutes, however, a sudden flurry of goals had the game tied 3-3, and that’s the way it ended after 20 minutes of scoreless overtime.

The two teams have gone to overtime in three straight meetings, but this one took a big come-back by the Knights (1-2-1), who scored three straight goals in the 64th, 73rd, and 79th minutes to take a 3-2 lead, and another goal by the Moccasins (1-3-2) in the 79th minute that tied the score again. It also took Erin Moseley saving a penalty kick in the second overtime for the game to end in a tie.

The Moccasins took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute on Moore’s second goal of the season. The senior midfielder volleyed a cross from Kirra Rainbow out of the right corner over the head of goalkeeper Caitlin Shaver and just under the crossbar.

Florida Southern added to its lead in the 43rd minute when Rainbow got the ball into the right corner for Gianna Conte, who came forward to play it for a cross into Chowansky. Much like Moore did on the first goal of the match, the freshman forward never let it hit the ground when she sent it inside the near post for a 2-0 halftime for the Mocs.

With an 11-3 advantage in shots during the first half, the gap could have been greater. Rainbow nearly added to her assist total on at least two other occasions only to have the ball run a little long for Kristy Legoas.

The Knights were able to put together a few more scoring chances early in the second half, but the Mocs were still firmly in control until the 64th minute. That’s when Summer Schults put Lynn on the board, coming in from the left side of the penalty area to convert on a ball played all the way across the box by Linzi Martin.

In the 73rd minute, Meghan Dolan scored the tying goal for the Knights after Moseley had first saved a shot by Lauren Handley and a follow-up attempt by Amanda Feldstein hit the post. Georgia Robert was able to recover the ball for the Knights and got it to Dolan for the shot before the Mocs could recover again.

Six minutes later, the Knights took the lead with Robert hitting a shot from well outside the box.

Rather than collapse under the weight of three straight goals by the Knights, the Moccasins answered immediately. Just 25 seconds after Lynn took the lead for the first time, Moore tied the score again with her second goal of the day, matching Robert with a shot from outside the box that left the game knotted at three.

The Mocs thought they might re-claim the lead in the 82nd minute when Legoas nearly got the ball deep in the box to Caroline Evers, but Lynn defender Paige Meggison headed it clear. Not to be outdone, Florida Southern defender Alyssa Abrahamsen kept the game tied for the Mocs in the 88th minute when she stopped a shot by Handley.

In the first overtime period, Florida Southern out-shot Lynn 4-0, and all of them were good chances. Moore forced Shaver into a save right away and nearly curled in a corner kick right after that. A Moore free kick and good work by Rainbow gave Evers a chance in the 96th minute, but it went wide of the mark.

The second overtime saw only one truly tense moment for either team, and it happened with 1:07 remaining when Feldstein was taken down in the box for a penalty kick. Martin took it for the Knights, but Moseley made the save to deny her and the Knights a win.

Moseley finished with 10 saves in the game while facing a season-high 18 shots. Shaver made five saves for Lynn, as Florida Southern also had a season-high in shots taken with 25.

Saturday meeting was a non-conference game between the two teams, with their regular conference game scheduled for Saturday, October 26 in Lakeland.

The Moccasins will be at home for their next match on Tuesday when they host Webber International at 5 p.m.
