LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Florida Southern continued play here Saturday at the 2014 Grizzly Open hosted by Georgia Gwinnett College by advancing two of its singles players to the quarterfinal round.

In Saturday's second day of action, the Moccasins had its two doubles teams and three singles players competing.

Freshmen Katie Stanford (Lake Worth, Fla.) and Shannon Griffin (Winter Haven, Fla.) opened play on Saturday morning by picking up wins in the Flight C round of 16 singles to move into the quarterfinal round. Stanford collected a 6-3, 6-0 win over West Georgia's Whitney Maples, while Griffin, who picked up a 7-5, 7-5 win on Friday over Alabama-Huntsville's Abby Burks, earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Berry's Kat Pugh.

FSC's other Flight C singles player on Saturday, freshman Cassie Eldredge (Peachtree City, Ga.) fell in the round of 16 in a hard-fought third-set tiebreaker to Alabama-Huntsville's Katie Bryant, 6-3, 4-6, 12-10. 

Later in the day on Saturday, Stanford and Griffin each played in the Flight C singles quarterfinal round as Griffin suffered a straight set loss to Emory's Danielle Truitt, 6-3, 6-0 and Stanford fell to West Alabama's Shannon McEvoy in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. McAvoy and Truitt will meet in one of Sunday's semifinal matches.

Meanwhile, in doubles action on Saturday's second day of the Grizzly Open, Eldredge and her partner Stanford fell in the round of 16 to Emory's Bea Rosen and Melissa Goodman, 8-2, while FSC's top doubles team of senior Magda Riutort (Petra, Spain) and junior Miroslava Mensikova (Hranice, Czech Republic) suffered an 8-0 loss in the round of 16 to Barry's tandem of Ana Pain and Kimmy Twelker, who later in the evening on Saturday advanced to Sunday's semifinal round with an 8-2 win over Rosen and Goodman.

The semifinals and finals in both doubles and singles are scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 19 beginning at 8 a.m. with the doubles bracket semifinals.
