Mocs Spoil Second-Half Lead in Loss to Georgia Southwestern

Box Score

AMERICUS, Ga. - The Florida Southern women's basketball team saw a second-half lead slip away as the Moccasins fell to Georgia Southwestern by a final of 79-75 on Saturday afternoon.

Trailing 78-75 with the clock winding down, senior guard Cashala Thompson's potential game-tying 3-point shot was partially blocked and fell short of the rim. The Hurricanes added a last-second foul shot to secure the win.

After trailing the entire first half, the Mocs opened the second on a 13-2 run and took a 51-43 lead. Sophomore forward Gianna Vastola (Sarasota, Fla.) sunk the tying and go-ahead points on free throws. Senior guard Syerra Davis (Tolleson, Ariz.) made consecutive baskets, and then Thompson (Tucson, Ariz.) ended the run with a 3-pointer approximately four minutes into the second half.

Florida Southern led by as much as 12 on two occasions in the second half, the latter with 13:32 to play on a Jensen Blassage (Cherry Valley, Ill.) jumper to make it a 60-48 game.

The Hurricanes stormed back to knotted the game at 69 apiece. Senior guard Danisha Green, who scored a game-high 22 points, made it 62-55 midway through the half with her only 3-pointer of the night, and her jumper with 7:07 remaining cut the deficit to three at 66-63. Junior guard JaQuasha Sesler scored the go-ahead basket on a free throw as the Canes regained the lead, 70-69.

Vastola gave the Mocs a one-point advantage, 73-72, with approximately 2:30 left in regulation. Green drew the score even with a free throw and Sesler put it away with a 3-pointer with just under a minute left.

The first half looked similar to the Moccasins' first 20 minutes against Valdosta State on Thursday night. A lackluster start against the Blazers allowed them to take a 23-point lead in the first half, forcing the Mocs to play catch-up for the remainder of the contest. Georgia Southwestern scored the first eight points of Saturday's game, the first five coming off consecutive turnovers by the Mocs. The Canes began to run away with the contest as they went on to build an 18-point lead, their largest of the game, at 37-19.

The Mocs responded, however, and netted the last 11 points of the opening half. Sophomore forward Christin Strawbridge (Lakeland, Fla.) reduced the deficit to single digits with four consecutive points off a layup and two free throws. Vastola made it 41-38 heading into the break with a jumper with 13.9 seconds left in the half.

Davis scored a career-high 20 points off 9-for-13 shooting from the field to go along with seven rebounds to lead the Mocs. Both Strawbridge and Vastola scored 11.

The 79 points allowed and 50.9 opponent's field goal percentage are both season worsts for FSC.

The Mocs open a three-game homestand with a 2 p.m. matchup against Embry-Riddle on Saturday, Nov. 29.
