Box Score LAKELAND – The Eastern New Mexico University women's basketball team snapped Florida Southern's three-game win streak in the FSC/Terrace Hotel Classic opener as the Zias defeated the Moccasins, 66-49.
As evidenced by the final score, the Mocs' offense struggled. The 49 points scored are the fewest since they netted 45 in back-to-back losses against Tampa on Feb. 26 and against Rollins on March 1 to end the 2013-14 season.
Before the game, FSC head coach Betsy Harris noted the Zias' (4-5) ability to shoot the three as one of their biggest strengths, and they proved it on Thursday afternoon. Eastern New Mexico's nine 3-pointers and 42.9 3-point field goal percentage both marked season highs.
On the contrary, FSC (5-3) shot a season-low 7.1 percent from 3-point range. Senior guard Cashala Thompson (Tucson, Ariz.) made the team's only three, and finished 1-for-8 from 3-point range.
The Mocs also lacked opportunities from the foul line. ENMU was called for only 12 fouls, resulting in a season-low two free-throw attempts; the Mocs went 0-for-2.
The treys began to fall early for the Zias; four of their first five baskets were from beyond the arc, helping them build a 14-8 lead 6:39 into the opening period. Junior Sarah Stinnett hit consecutive 3-pointers followed by one each from the Cooper twins, juniors Jaylyn and Jordyn.
Senior guard Syerra Davis (Tolleson, Ariz.) recorded her second career double-double with 12 points and a season-high 10 rebounds. She also led the team with a season-high five assists. She scored 10 of her points in the first half. Her jumper with just over seven minutes left before halftime tied the game at 18.
Sophomore forward Gianna Vastola (Sarasota, Fla.) tied the game for the last time at 22 with approximately four minutes until the break, but Stinnett struck for another 3-pointer six seconds later to give ENMU the lead for good. The Zias led by only five at halftime, 27-22, but outscored the Mocs 39-27 in the second period.
ENMU's leading scorer, senior Tori Tucker, took over in the second half. She scored 16 of her game-high 22 points in the second half, including a pair of timely treys. The latter made it 60-41 with 3:23 left in regulation. Tucker's two free throws with 2:01 remaining extended the Zias' lead to 23.
Junior guard Sydni Payne (Conyers, Ga.), who started at point guard, netted 12 points, one shy of her career high. Sophomore forward Christin Strawbridge (Lakeland, Fla.) added 10 points and was an efficient 5-for-7 from the field. Sophomore guard Morgan Siebka (Slippery Rock, Pa.) recorded a career-high four steals for the second straight contest.
The Mocs will look to rebound from their loss to the Zias with a 3 p.m. matchup against Molloy (N.Y.) at Jenkins Field House on Friday, Dec. 19. Tampa will open the second day of the FSC/Terrace Hotel Classic with a 1 p.m. game against Eastern New Mexico.
