POOLER, Ga. - Thanks to two players shooting under par here Monday in the second round of the Armstrong Pirate Men's Golf Invitational, Florida Southern jumped four spots up the leaderboard to stand fifth after the first two rounds of the 54-hole event held at Savannah Quarters Country Club, which is the site of this spring's NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional.
The 19th-ranked Mocs, who shot a 303 in the first round to stand ninth out of 17 teams, rebounded to shoot a one-under par 283 in the second round to move up to fifth place on the leaderboard. The 283 was the second lowest score in the second round among the 17 teams. After 36 holes, the Mocs have recorded an 18-over par 586 to stand four strokes behind Saint Leo (582) and two strokes in front of North Alabama (588).
Leading the way for the Mocs after 36 holes is freshman Jason Huntington (Lakeland, Fla.), who carded a two-over 144 to stand tied for 13th place. After firing a 75 in the first round, Huntington shot a two-under par 69 in the second round. Huntington's 69 is tied for the second lowest round of the season by a Moccasin player.
Nova Southeastern leads the tournament after 36 holes as the eighth-ranked Sharks shot a seven-under par 277 in the second round to stand at one-under 567 after two rounds. NSU fired a 290 in the first round. First-round leader and tournament host Armstrong Atlantic followed up its 279 in the first round with a 290 in the second to fall to second with a one-over 569 for 36 holes, while 10th-ranked Lynn shot rounds of 292 and 284 to stand third after 36 holes with an eight-over par 576.
The next four teams in the team standings are separated by a total of 14 strokes as Saint Leo (582) is fourth, while 22nd-ranked Rollins is eighth after shooting a 596 for 36 holes.
Nova Southeastern's Hunter O'Mahony sit atop the leaderboard as he finished the first two round shooting a four-under 138 after carding rounds of 72 and 66. Armstrong's Travis Williamson (70, 69) stands second as he fired a three-under 139 for 36 holes, while five players are tied for second after all four golfers fired 36 hole totals of two-under par 140's. In addition to Huntington, senior All-American Tim Crouch (Mt. Vernon, Ohio) is tied for 17th (145) after the first two rounds as he rebounded with a second score of one-under par 70 after firing a four-over 75 in the first round. Redshirt sophomore Alex Carpenter (Westerville, Ohio) followed up his 76 in the first round with a one-over 72 in the second round to move into a tie for 26th place with a six-over par 148 for 36 holes and senior Shane Convery (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) shot a 149 for 36 holes to stand tied for 32nd place. Convery fired rounds of 77 and 72 respectively.
The final golfer for the Mocs was sophomore Austin Schultz (Lakeland, Fla.) as he followed up his 77 in the first round with a 74 in the second round to stand tied for 45th with a 151 for 36 holes. Schultz's score of 74 was the lowest dropped score in the second round among the Top 5 teams atop the leaderboard.
FSC will complete play in the two-day event on Tuesday, Feb. 25 as they will be paired with Saint Leo and North Alabama in the final round. Those three teams will tee off in threesomes running from 8:45 a.m. to 9:21 a.m. at the Savannah Quarter Country Club.
