LAKELAND â€" Taking on Division I East Carolina in their return from spring break, the Florida Southern Moccasins dropped a 9-0 decision to the Pirates in the first of their five matches this week.
Florida Southern (3-4, ranked #25 in Division II) fell behind 2-0 when East Carolina (12-5) won the first two doubles points. The Moccasins nearly picked up a point in the second doubles flight though when senior Nathan Leavitt (Bradenton, Fla.) and junior Carl Lundberg (Stocksund, Sweden) took Miles Holvoet and Patriek Wolterbeek to a tie-breaker, but the Pirate pair won it 7-0 to win the match 9-8 and put ECU up 3-0.
In singles play, the Pirates put the match away with five straight-set wins, but Fredric Lehfeldt dropped his first set to Florida Southern senior Vladimir Barabash (Puhovka, Ukraine), 6-2. Lehfeldt pulled out a 7-5 win in the second set and went on to win the third set 10-5.
Florida Southern will be at home again on Wednesday when it hosts Young Harris (GA) at 3 p.m.
