Three Shutout Wins in Singles and One in Doubles Leads to 9-0 Win Over Winona State

LAKELAND - Florida Southern continued its eight-match home stand here Thursday afternoon by posting its second straight shutout victory as the 10th-ranked Moccasins collected a 9-0 win over Winona (Minn.) State in non-conference action at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.

The Mocs opened the home stand on Monday with a 9-0 win over Chestnut Hill and improves to 3-1 at home on the season and 6-2 overall on the year. Winona State falls to 4-7 on the season in its final match of its Spring Break trip to Florida.

In Thursday's match, the Mocs posted three shutout wins in singles and earned a shut out win at No. 3 doubles as seniors Joalis Dominguez (Vero Beach, Fla.) and Laura Wichmann (Waldshut-Tiengen, Germany) earned an 8-0 win over Brittney Freund and Kate Scruggs. It was the pair's third straight win in doubles as they improved to 6-1 on the season.

FSC's other two doubles matches were much of the same as its No. 2 team of freshman Dominique Friedrichs (Hufingen, Germany) and junior Oliva Spagnuolo (Andover, Mass.) won 8-1, while the Mocs nationally-ranked No. 1 team posted an 8-4 win over WSU's No. 1 team of  Hannah Potter and Jessica Urban, 8-4. The 10th-ranked team of Goge and Riutort have now won five straight matches and are 6-2 on the season in doubles.

Meanwhile, in singles action, the Mocs picked up 6-0, 6-0 shutout victories by Goge at the No. 2 spot, Spagnuolo at the No. 3 and her older sister, Victoria Spagnuolo (Andover, Mass.) at the No. 5 spot. In the other three singles matches, the Mocs only lost a total of seven games as 22nd-ranked Riutort lost five of those seven games as she defeated Urban (6-4, 6-1) at the No. 1 spot, while Friedrichs won 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot and senior Pamela Paradis (Quebec City, Quebec) won 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot.

The Mocs will continue its home stand on Friday, March 14 as they host seventh-ranked West Florida in a 2 p.m. match at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
