Florida Southern Drops Just Five Games in 9-0 Win Over West Chester

LAKELAND â€" Senior Sabine Goge ran her personal winning streak to nine matches, while junior Olivia Spagnuolo, senior Pamela Paradis, and senior Crystal Copeland all won their singles matches without dropping a game as #10 Florida Southern blanked West Chester (PA), 9-0 on Tuesday afternoon.

Not only did Florida Southern win three singles matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores, two of the doubles teams won 8-0, and the Moccasins dropped just five games in the entire contest. One of them came at the top doubles flight where the nation’s 10th-ranked team of Goge (Cesis, Latvia) and junior Magda Riutort (Petra, Spain) defeated Nicole Fahringer and Maddy Shaak, 8-1. That put Florida Southern ahead 3-0, and it was over quickly after that.

Spagnuolo (Andover, Mass.) and Paradis (Quebec City, QB) were the first to finish with perfect scores in singles to clinch the match for Florida Southern, and Goge followed with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the No. 2 position over Fahringer. Riutort had the closest match on the score sheet with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 over Shaak, and freshman Dominique Friedrichs (Hufingen, Germany) won her match by dropping only one game.

Copeland (Marietta, Ga.) then ended the day with her 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6, her second such score this season.

The win gave Florida Southern a 7-3 record, while West Chester fell to 3-6. It was the Golden Rams’ first match of the spring after playing eight matches in the fall.

Florida Southern will play its next match on Wednesday, taking on Bluefield State (WV) at 3 p.m.
